The Respiratory System By: Laniece Galloway, Michkaela Brown, And Katie Lucken

Where is it Located The respiratory system starts at your nose or your mouth, then travels down your throat and ends in your chest at your lungs.

How to Keep Your System Healthy 1. Drink plenty of fluids. 2. Do not smoke. 3. Soup broth helps colds and coughs.

Main Parts  The Lungs

Parts of the System  Nasal Cavity  Trachea  Bronchi  Bronchioles  Pharynx  Lungs  Alveolus  Diaphragm  Larynx

Definitions of The Systems Parts  Nasal Cavity- The cavity on either side of the nasal septum going from the nares to the pharynx.  Trachea- The windpipe going from larynx and the bronchi.  Bronchi- A small branch of bronchous.  Bronchioles- The same as bronchi.  Pharynx- The tube with its surrounding membrane and muscles. It connects the mouth and the esophagus.

Definitions of The System Parts  Lungs- Either of the two saclike respiratory organs in the middle of humans and the higher vertebrates.  Alveolus- An air cell of the lungs, formed by tiny air passageways.  Diaphragm- A muscular, membranous wall separating cavitys, or limiting them.  Larynx - Membrane at the upper part of the trachea in humans, in which the vocal cords are located.

Diseases  Bronchitis- A condition in which the small airways in the lungs become inflamed with a virus.  Asthma- When you have asthma, your lungs are smaller than usual.  Lung Cancer- One of the commonest forms of cancer.  Pneumonia- Inflammation of the of the lungs with congestion.

Cure to The Diseases  Bronchitis- Sometimes, no treatment is necessary. Antibiotics don’t work against viral infections. Most medications don’t help treat bronchitis  Asthma- Control airway swelling, and stay away from things that trigger your asthma.  Lung Cancer- Since Lung Cancer spreads fast, treatment must include cancer-killing drugs (chemotherapy) taken by mouth or injected into the body.  Pneumonia- Your doctor has to first decide whether you need to be in the hospital. If you are treated in the hospital, you will receive: Fluids and antibiotics in your veins Oxygen therapy Breathing treatments (possibly)

3 Questions 1. True or False? Carbon Dioxide is good for your body. 2. Do your lungs inflate or deflate when you breathe? 3. The ribs are helpful to the lungs, but how are they helpful?

Question Answers 1. The answer is False. 2. Your lungs inflate when you breath. 3. The ribs are helpful because they protect the lungs from injury.

Diagram oschools.org/se aman/webquests /lungs.htm oschools.org/se aman/webquests /lungs.htm chpe.com/a natomy/respi ratory_system.php#a \

Fun Facts 1. It is healthier to breath through you nose than it is your mouth. 2. Cells cannot turn food into energy without a constant supply of oxygen. 3. The ribs protect the lungs from injury. 4. The right lung is bigger than the left lung. 5. As people get older the number of breaths lessens.

Other Systems It works With  Digestive System  Circulatory System  Excretory Sytem

Problems and What They Affect  Smoking- Respiratory system, and Circulatory system  Diesel exhaust particles- Respiratory system and the Circulatory system.  Air Pollution- Respiratory system, and the Circulatory system.  Battery manufactuers- Respiratory System, and the Circulatory system.

How it Works With Other Systems  Digestive- the respiratory system and the digestive system work together to provide energy to body cells.  Circulatory- the respiratory system and the circulatory system work together when it supplies the body with oxygen and it removes metabolic waste products.  Excretory- The Excretory System and the Respiratory System work together when they both release waste.

A Respiratory Rap  Note- The singer has a bad voice. Michkaela’s Request. V6v6k
