25 So, when they had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. 26 But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, “Get up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) 27 So he got up and went; and there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. Acts 8:25-29

29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” 30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: “HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. 33 IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH.” Acts 8:29-33

34 The eunuch answered Philip and said, “Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself or of someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. 36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 37 [And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”] Acts 8:34-37

38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he came to Caesarea. Acts 8:38-40

From our text we see the providence of God in salvation; how our God is purposely orchestrating all things so that His people would spread the gospel to the ends of the earth so that men and women might be saved. Main Point

I. A Practical Providence (8:25-34) “God gets His people where He wants them to be; to do what He wants them to do; to say what He wants them to say; to their benefit and all to His glory!”

“But a natural man (an unconverted, living according to the ways and understanding of this world man) does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” 1 Corinthians 2:14

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!” Romans 10:14-15

II. A Pointed Proclamation (8:35) When we speak to others about the Scriptures, our goal is to point them to Jesus and what He has accomplished for our salvation [1 Corinthians 1:23; 2:2].

III. A Positive Profession (8:36-39) A positive profession of faith in Jesus is initiated by God (and His providence), comes by way of Jesus being preached (as Philip did for the Eunuch), and results in both conversion (a changed-life) and commitment (the resolve to follow Jesus at all cost) [Galatians 2:20].

IV. A Persistent Pursuit (8:40) A persistent pursuit - the continual desire to make Jesus known [see John 17:3].

God brought the Eunuch to worship in Jerusalem. God brought you to worship at Hope. God led the Eunuch to read the Bible. God led you to study the Bible this morning. God guided one to share the gospel with the Eunuch. God guided me to share the gospel with you. God sent the Eunuch out to the world to share the gospel. God is sending you out into the world to share the gospel. God’s Good Providence
