We have been examining the last words of Jesus. Last words are usually significant, so we wish to examine the last words spoken by Jesus before his death Father forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34). Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). Woman, behold your son: behold your mother (John 19:26-27). Eli Eli lama sabachthani? ("My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?", Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34). I thirst (John 19:28). It is finished (John 19:30). Father, into your hands I commit my spirit (Luke 23:46). It Is Finished Most People Have Unfinished Business Have you ever wandered through a cemetery, reading the birth and death dates? So many died in their youth still had goals they had never realized. Even those who live to old age, find that they didn’t complete all that they had set out to do in life. Jesus Left No Unfinished Business Jesus was the only perfect man who perfectly completed His perfect work, and he did so in a little over 30 years. I do not believe these words were uttered in despair and resignation, but rather in triumph.
What Was Finished? His Suffering On The Cross Was Finished. If we knew in advance all the horrors that Jesus knew, how would we have faced life? John 2:4; 3:14 Matthew 20:22 Matthew 16:21 Luke 22:41-44 Luke 22:41-44 And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. Matt 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day John 2:4 And Jesus said to her, " Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." John 3:14 "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; Matt 20:22 But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able."

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel." His Suffering On The Cross Was Finished. His Mission Was Finished. Jesus knew His mission from an early age. (Luke 2:49) All Scripture was fulfilled. (John 19:28) The Scheme of Redemption is finished (Genesis 3:15). Finished was His perfectly lived life (Philippians 2:8). Phil 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Luke 2:49 And He said to them, "Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?
What Was Finished? His Suffering On The Cross Was Finished. Rom 3:23-26 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. His Suffering On The Cross Was Finished. His Mission Was Finished. The Justice Of God Was Satisfied. God cannot simply “absolve people of their sins.” Justice was required. Romans 3:23-26.
The purchase price of your salvation has already been paid You cannot earn it, it is a gift (Ephesians 2:8-9) But that gift must either be accepted or rejected by you After such suffering by Jesus, all done because of His love for you, why would you deny Him the joy His suffering was intended to bring (Heb 12:2) Heb 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Eph 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast
