Lesson 11 David’s Mighty Men Saul and The Witch Of En-Dor 1 Chronicles 12: Sam 28
Supporters while in Ziklag 1 Sam 27:5-7 They were very skilled in war From various tribes and peoples – Some even Saul’s kinsmen in Benjamin (ambidextrous – Judg 20:16 3:15 ) – Proficient with slings, bows and arrows – Physically impressive (cross Jordan River at flood stage; run like gazelles; 100s…1000s) David’s Men 1 Chron 12
Some who came from Benjamin (Saul) had to be “vetted” (verified) – David couldn’t afford to take any chances – If they came to truly help, David’s heart would be united with them – If they came to betray (spies), David would let God deal appropriately with them David’s Men 1 Chron 12 Again, David would not defend himself (avenge himself of being wronged)
Saul had previous success at keeping the Philistines out of Israel 1 Sam However, Philistia may have thought now the time was “ripe” for a major offensive [1] Samuel (spiritual leader) was dead [2] Saul apparently ignored his kingdom while hunting David [3] Israel’s most valiant warrior (David) had “defected” to the Philistines Saul & The Witch 28:1-25

The Philistines were able to set up camp far into Israel…as far as Shunem v. 1 Achish reminds David where his “allegiance” lies…David continues to let Achish think he is with Philistia v. 2 Saul needs information vv – Samuel is dead – Saul had removed all spiritists [Good] Ex 22:18 Deut 18:9-14 Saul & The Witch 28:1-25
Saul needs information vv – Saul feared the Philistine military build-up – He tried to inquire of the Lord, but got no answers 1 Sam 16:14 – He ordered servants to “violate his own rule”…find a medium/spiritist – They inform him about a witch in En-Dor – Saul comes to her disguised…she is leery about helping conjure up the dead Saul & The Witch 28:1-25
Saul needs information vv – When Samuel is “brought up” the witch seems to be the most surprised – At once she knows her visitor is Saul Saul gets his information vv – Samuel chides Saul on disturbing him – Saul should not have been surprised God did not answer him…the reason given again was Amalek 1 Sam 15 Saul & The Witch 28:1-25
Saul gets his information vv – Saul will lose the battle…Israel will fall into Philistine hands – Saul and his sons will “join Samuel” (die) Saul departs from the witch vv – He had not eaten all day…now he was too distraught to eat – Saul did eat after his servants and the witch implored him to eat for strength Saul & The Witch 28:1-25
(1) Sorcery is fraudulent…sinful – Those who practice it know they are lying 1 Sam 28:12 Acts 8:9-13,18-19 – It is a work of the flesh Gal 5:19-21 – Things “…like these” (horoscopes, astrology, tarot cards, scientology)
(2) Nothing needed more than truth – Many say they would believe or be convinced if they could speak to an angel or to someone from the dead – The Scripture certainly refutes this Gal 1:6-9 Lk 16:27-31 – There has always been a premium placed on learning and knowing truth Prov 23:23 Jn 8:31-32
