Research Microorganisms Today you are conducting research to learn the basic characteristics of different microorganisms. This research is particularly important because it will also be used in your upcoming project. Knowing the basic characteristics of different microorganisms gives scientists who study the spread of disease (epidemiologist) extremely necessary information in studying a disease. Use your book and the provided websites to guide your search.

Microbiology Guide Microorganism: Basic Characteristics: (form, size, parts) Diseases it can cause: Treatment of Disease: Prevention Methods: Bacteria Drawing: Unicellular or multicellular? Describe each: Spherical: Rodlike: Spiral: Corkscrew: How does this microorganism infect another organism? Fungi: Drawing: Unicellular or multicellular? How does it infect another organism? Virus: Drawing: Living or nonliving? Parts of a virus: How does this microorganism infect another organism? Parasite: Drawing: Define host cell: How does this microorganism infect another organism?

Use the following websites:

Microbe Villains

Assignment Description The movie is based on the popular heroes from the Immune Platoon. In order to have the top summer flick you must create two amazingly evil villains! You are one of Hollywood’s most creative movie producers and you have been assigned the task of finalizing the villains for the latest action packed blockbuster hit movie.

Description Research one bacterial and one viral pathogen to act as your latest villains. Choose your one bacterial pathogen and one viral pathogen from the lists provided below. Then, produce two “wanted” posters (one for each villain) to promote your newest movie characters. Once you have made one virus villain poster and one bacteria villain poster (on white printer paper) you will mount them on one sheet of construction paper (one on the front and one on the back).

Requirements Your wanted poster must include the following information/sections: 1.Name of the disease and pathogen (along with a creative nickname) 2.“Mug Shot” cartoon-like photo of the pathogen (drawn in color) 3.Description of pathogen – not the disease (what does it look like) 4.Type of microbe (virus or bacteria) 5.“Hide out” of the culprit (where it is most likely to be found) 6.Microbe’s “MO” (How the organism attacks and spreads) 7.Most common victims to prey upon (children, adults, elderly, immunosuppressed, etc.) 8.Most common injury done to victim 9.Number of victims – is it dangerous? (annual rate in US or World – degree of damage caused) 10.Most effective weapons against the pathogen (Be specific) *Must be neat, creative and colorful!!!
