Setting the Scene Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar wanted every one of the state’s registered voters go to the polls at election time. To help reach a goal, he launched a program in 2001 that gave each gradating high school senior in state a voter registration application.

People convicted of a felony lose their rights to vote until they severed any punishment ordered by the courts and if you didn’t finish you lose your right to vote. In Texas, a person must be at least 18 years old to vote.

Elections There are three types of election in Texas. Primary Election - members of a political party choose their candidates for the general election. General Election - voters choose who will government the city, states, or country. Special Election - to fill offices that are called vacant. People may vote for constitutional amendments. They also vote in referendums. This is an election in which voters approve or reject new laws. Citizens may also decide whether to remove an official from office.

Citizenship: Taking Part Since 1955, women have been eligible to serve on juries in Texas. You must be a least 18 to serve on a jury. By serving on a jury, citizens help preserve the right of all Americans to fair trail by a jury of their peers. Staying informed is another way to promote citizenship. Good citizens understand our democratic values and patriotism. These people think well of, understand enjoy, and grateful for the demarcation values of their state and county.
