Summertime in the City

Combine the study of History, Culture, Literature and Film

 Counts toward Major, Minor, Elective or HC requirement.  Hybrid course with 3 follow-up meetings in the Spring semester, scheduled in advance, to Argentinian places in PB, Broward and MD counties. SPW 4930: The Cultures of Buenos Aires (3 credits)

 Considered one of the most complex cities in the history of the Western World, Buenos Aires stands as a comprehensive urban experience, a city in search of an identity through replications and resonances of Paris, Madrid, New York, London or Rome. Its claim to recognition as epicenter of the Hispanic world as well as an enclave of Europe (“The Paris of South America”) on the American continent is often at odds with the other cultures that surround this cosmopolitan oasis. Buenos Aires, the city of Borges and Cortázar as well as land of escape, might not be the best representation of the country of which it is the capital and its porteña culture might just stand as a fragile façade hiding historical wounds and cultural traumas beyond Argentina. Throughout readings of short journalistic and literary pieces, discussions, excursions, guest speakers and films, students will be exposed to these cultural complexities and will be able to reflect on them in a follow-up online component once they return to the US through comparisons with their own environment: the city of Miami and South Florida. This study-abroad program is facilitated by ISA (International Studies Abroad) Course Description
