The Book of Romans The setting of the book of Romans.

The Book of Romans The book of Romans was addressed to a local church in the capital city of the Roman empire. The city was center of Roman rule, Nero (54-68 AD) Emperor during the time of writing (58 AD)

Nero (Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus); Nero (Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus); (December 15 37 – June 9 68) was Roman Emperor from 54 to 68 and the last in the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Nero was adopted by his great-uncle Claudius to become his heir and successor. He succeeded to the throne in 54 following Claudius‘ death. During his reign, Nero focused much of his attention on diplomacy, trade, and enhancing the cultural life of the Empire. He ordered theaters built and promoted athletic games. In 64, most of Rome was destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome, which many Romans believed Nero himself had started in order to clear land for his planned palatial complex.

The Book of Romans The book of Romans was addressed to a local church in the capital city of the Roman empire. The city was center of Roman rule, Nero (37-68 AD) Emperor during the time of writing (58 AD) The city was center of Roman culture with great advancements of Roman engineering and luxury that some are even here this day.

Ancient Roman society contributed greatly to government, politics, warfare, art, literature, architecture, technology, and language in the Western world. A civilization highly developed for its time, Rome professionalized and greatly expanded its military and created a system of government called res publica, the inspiration for some modern republics such as the United States and France. It achieved impressive technological and architectural feats, such as the construction of an extensive system of aqueducts and roads, as well as large monuments, palaces, and public facilities.

The Book of Romans The establishment of the church at Rome is not known though there were those from Rome present on the day of Pentecost, Acts 2:10. The church at Rome was made up of Jew and Gentile converts, Romans 14:1-15:13. The church at Rome had a good reputation, Romans 1:8. Paul desired to visit the church at Rome, Romans 15:23.

The evidence points to the book of Romans being written by Paul while he was at Corinth during his third missionary journey (58 AD) - Romans 16:23; I Corinthians 1:13-14; II Timothy 4:20.

Romans The Book of The setting of the book of Romans. The survey of the book of Romans.

The Book of Romans The book of Romans has been described as the most challenging book of the New Testament. Key words found in Romans are righteousness, faith, law, all, and sin each appear at least sixty times in this epistle. In our survey, we will focus upon the idea of God’s righteousness.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for Righteousness

Romans 1:1-4,16-17 - Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for Righteousness

Romans 3:9-18 - What then. Are we better than they. Not at all Romans 3:9-18 - What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. 10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.“ 13 "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips"; 14 "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.“ 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.“ 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 Righteousness

Romans 5:1-9 - Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 Righteousness

Romans 6:15-19 - What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 God’s plan for righteousness overcomes the curse of the Law, Chapter 7:1-25 Righteousness

Romans 7:1-6 - Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 God’s plan for righteousness overcomes the curse of the Law, Chapter 7:1-25 God’s plan for righteousness provides all spiritual needs, Chapter 8:1-39 Righteousness

Romans 8:31-39 - What then shall we say to these things Romans 8:31-39 - What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.“

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 God’s plan for righteousness overcomes the curse of the Law, Chapter 7:1-25 God’s plan for righteousness provides all spiritual needs, Chapter 8:1-39 Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness fulfills the hope of true Israel, Chapter 9:1-11:36

Romans 9:1-8 - I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen. 6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of

Abraham; but, "In Isaac your seed shall be called.“ 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. c.f. Galatians 3:26-29.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 God’s plan for righteousness overcomes the curse of the Law, Chapter 7:1-25 God’s plan for righteousness provides all spiritual needs, Chapter 8:1-39 Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness fulfills the hope of true Israel, Chapter 9:1-11:36 God’s plan for righteousness demands righteous lives, Chapter 12:1-15:13

Romans 12:1-3 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

God’s plan for Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness is reveled in the gospel, Chapter 1:1-17 God’s plan for righteousness is needed by all, Chapter 1:18-3:20 God’s plan for God’s plan for righteousness is given through faith, Chapter 3:21-5:11 God’s plan for righteousness solves the problem of sin, Chapter 5:12-6:23 God’s plan for righteousness overcomes the curse of the Law, Chapter 7:1-25 God’s plan for righteousness provides all spiritual needs, Chapter 8:1-39 Righteousness God’s plan for righteousness fulfills the hope of true Israel, Chapter 9:1-11:36 God’s plan for righteousness demands righteous lives, Chapter 12:1-15:13 Paul’s final comments and admonition, Chapter 15:14-16:27

Romans 16:25-27 - Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began 26 but now has been made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures has been made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith— 27 to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.
