The Patriarchs and Matriarchs Old Testament Survey

Intro to the Patriarchs The patriarchs are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as Jacob’s 12 sons Their story is found in Genesis Their story is central to the rest of scripture Their story reveals God’s faithfulness and His desire to make His glory know to all nations through His people by His strength All of them are bad fathers and husbands Many practiced polygamy which is always shown in negative light They all marry in the family

Intro to Abraham & Sarah His name means the Father of many Nations Sarah’s name means princess He was given two main titles Father of all who believe (Rom 4:11) Friend of God (James 2:23, Isa 41:8, 2 Chronicles 20:7) God made two major covenants with Abraham that still have major implications today They were not perfect but fully displayed that one is justified by faith and not by works

Abraham’s Family

Abraham’s Journey

The Call of Abraham Gen 12 :1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Abraham originally lived with the Chaldeans (Babylonians) (Gen 11:31) The Chaldeans are known throughout scripture as being a deep in witchcraft.(Dan 4:7) Babylon symbolically represents the kingdom of Satan (Isa 14:3-21) So symbolically Abraham is being taken out of the Kingdom of Satan to be brought into another land

Seven Promises 1. Will make of Abraham a great nation 2. Will bless Abraham 3. Will make his name great 4. He will be a blessing 5. God will bless those who blesses him 6. God will curse those who curse him 7. All the nations of the earth will be blessed All have come true and continually being fulfilled This covenant reveals God’s faithfulness to His word. Even through all their rebellion the Jewish people have been a blessing to the nations God wanted to make His friendship with Abraham and his children known to the nations for all generations

Battle of the 9 Kings Shemites Amraphel of Shinar (Babylon) Arioch of Ellasher Chedorlaomer of Elam (Persia) Tidal King of Goiim (Nations) Hamites Bera king of Sodom Birsha king of Gomorrah Shinab king of Admah Shemeber king of Zeboiim King of Bela (Zoar) First recorded war in scripture The Hamites rebel against the Shemites and lose As a result Lot is captured because he was in Sodom Abraham rallies his forces and defeats the kings and rescues Lot Melchizedek negotiates peace treaty between Abraham and Bera

Abraham and Melchizedek Melchizedek was the king of Salem (Peace) Melchizedek name means King of Righteousness He is a king and priest and a symbol of Jesus and the Church Makes peace between Abraham and Bera King of Sodom over bread and wine. (Cross reference Ephesians 2: 11-22) Hebrews 7:3 “He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.” HusbandWife IsaacRebecca JosephAsenath MosesZipporah SalmonRehab BoazRuth

God’s First Covenant with Abraham Gen On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates This is an unconditional covenant God makes with Abraham. This is a covenant regarding the land

God’s Second Covenant with Abraham Gen 17: 1-14 Gen 17: 1,2 “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2 that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” Conditional covenant Circumcision is the sign of the covenant Promises a son Changes the names of Abram and Sarai to Abraham and Sarah

Hebrew Letters Aleph א Leader/Strength Bet ב House Hey ה Behold/ Spirit/Essence א ב Ab L eader of the House = א ה ב Aheb Spirit of the Father = Abram = אַבְרָם Sarai = שָׂרַי Abraham = אַבְרָהָם Sarah= שָׂרָה Modern HebrewProto-Semitic Father Love

The Three Visitors Gen 18 Abraham gets visited by three visitors whom he recognizes The three visitors are The Lord and two angels Abraham makes bread from 3 measures of flour. This becomes the tradition for the fellowship offering. (Matt 13:33) Abraham pleads with God to spare the city if there are righteous

Sodom and Gomorrah God destroys both cities completely The cities were destroyed because of sexual immorality and rejecting authority (Jude 7,8; 2 Peter 2: 7-9) The city could not be destroyed until Lot and his family left because Lot was righteous (2 Peter 2: 7,8) Lot and his daughters through incest produced the nations of Ammon and Moab

Zoar

Sacrificing Isaac Hosea 12:10 I have also spoken unto the prophets, and I have multiplied visions; and by the ministry of the prophets have I used similitudes. Rev 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Since Jesus is the word (John 1) every word/story in scripture has a past, present, and future meaning

Sacrificing Isaac (cont.) Gen 22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” The word for test means to “attempt to learn the true nature of something” This is the first time the word Love is used in the Bible The journey took 3 days (Gen 22:4) There were two servants who went with them but only to the base of the mountain. The saw Isaac after he came down from the Mt. There were two men outside the tomb of Jesus (Gen 22:3,19; Luke 24:4) Jesus wants to be known as someone who laughs

Isaac and Rebecca Gen 24 Happens after Sarah had died Abraham doesn’t want Isaac to marry a Canaanite (Gen 24:3). Canaanites are from the decedents of Ham. Rebecca is from Shem Abraham’s servant (Eliezer Gen 15:2) goes to get Isaac Eliezer -“God my Help” represents the Holy Spirit. John14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” He is not named by Abraham John 16:3 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; He brings her back to Isaac Our Helper brings us to Jesus

Jacob and Esau Esau is the first born Jacob buys the birthright Esau Receives the blessing through deceit encouraged by Rebecca Esau marries an Ishmaelite. The decedents of Esau become the Edomites. Harod is a descendent of Esau

Esau’s Descendants

Events in Jacob’s Life Gen 28: Jacob encounters God at Bethel Gen 29:Jacob cheated by Laban; Marries Rachel and Leah Gen 30:12 Tribes born Gen 31:Jacob returns to the Land Gen 32:Jacob wrestles with God; renamed Israel Gen 33:Jacob reconciled to Esau Gen 34:Sin the family; Dinah revenged Gen 35:Jacob returns to Bethel; Benjamin born; Rachel dies, Isaac Dies
