General Transfer Rules

1. Which of the following does NOT trigger transfer status? A. Officially registered and enrolled in a minimum, full- time program of studies Bylaw sets forth the conditions that render an individual a transfer student, some of which follow: a)The student was officially registered and enrolled in a minimum, full-time program of studies in any quarter/semester of an academic year, provided the student was present on the opening day of classes; b)The student attended a class or classes in any quarter/semester in which the student was enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies;

Bylaw Cont’d… c)The student is or was enrolled in a minimum full- time program of studies in a night school that is considered to have regular terms (semesters/quarters) the same as the institution's day school, and the student is or was a regularly matriculated student; f)The student reported for a regular squad practice prior to the beginning of any quarter/semester. Participation only in picture-day activities would not constitute "regular practice;”

Bylaw Cont’d… (g) The student participated in practice or competed in a given sport even though the student was enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies; OR (h) The student received institutional financial aid while attending a summer term, summer school or summer-orientation program –A prospect (recruited or nonrecruited) who is denied admission to the institution for full-time enrollment shall be permitted to enroll at another institution without being considered a transfer student.

2. A student who has attended only summer school classes at an institution is considered a transfer. False Per Bylaw , enrollment in or attending classes only in summer school will not trigger transfer status. BUT, if the student receives institutional financial aid for summer school then he/she will be considered a transfer unless he/she is denied admission per Bylaw (h).

3. Unless a transfer meets an exception, he/she must serve a year in residence upon enrollment. True Per Bylaw , a student who transfers from any collegiate institution is required to complete one full academic year of residence at the certifying institution before being eligible to compete for or to receive travel expenses from the member institution, unless the student satisfies the applicable transfer requirements or qualifies for one of the many transfer exceptions.

4. A transfer may use a summer term to complete his/her year in residence. False Per Bylaw , a summer term shall not be used to satisfy a term of residence. Residence is defined as enrollment in a full-time academic program during the academic year. A student admitted after the 12 th class day may not use that semester to satisfy an academic term of residence

Bylaw To satisfy an academic year of residence, a student shall: Be enrolled in and complete a full- time program of studies for two full semesters/three quarters.

5. All student-athletes who transfer from one Mountain West Conference (MWC) institution to another will be subject to the Intra-Conference transfer rule. False 6. A student-athlete who transfers from one MWC institution to another must meet what requirements before he/she is eligible to compete at the certifying institution? D. All of the above

MWC 3.6 Intra-Conference Transfer Rule A student-athlete who has received athletics aid, and who transfers, directly or indirectly, from one MWC institution to another is subject to the following conditions prior to competing at the certifying institution: a)Must serve an academic year in residence at the certifying institution; b)Must forfeit one season of competition; AND c)Shall not receive athletics aid during the academic year in residence. An example of an indirect transfer is when an individual goes from a MWC school to a non-MWC school such as a JC, and back to a MW school, or a transfer, who would be subject to the rule.

Four-Year Transfer Rules

7. Which of the following are conditions for use of the one-time transfer exception? D. Both A & B Per Bylaw , use of the one-time transfer exception requires all of the following conditions: a)The student is a participant in a sport other than baseball, basketball, or FBS football at the institution to which he/she is transferring. b)The student has not transferred previously from a four-year institution unless, in the previous transfer, the student-athlete used the discontinued/nonsponsored sport exception;

Bylaw Cont’d… c)The student must be one who would have been academically eligible had he/she remained at the initial institution; and d)If the student is transferring from an NCAA or NAIA member institution, the student's previous institution shall certify in writing that it has no objection to the student's being granted an exception to the transfer-residence requirement.

8. In the sports of baseball, football and basketball at SJSU, a nonrecruited student-athlete who has not received financial aid may use the one-time transfer exception. True Per Bylaw , a student-athlete who does not qualify for the exception due to Bylaw (a) may use the one-time transfer exception, provided he/she was not recruited by the original four-year institution and has never received athletics aid from any four-year institution. Student must fulfill the remaining provisions of Bylaw

9. A student who transfers from a four-year institution that dropped his/her sport may be immediately eligible to compete upon transfer. True Per Bylaw , a student may be immediately eligible upon transfer if any of the following has occurred: a)The student's original four-year institution dropped the sport in which the student practiced or competed from its intercollegiate program; OR b)The student's original four-year institution reclassified the sport in which the student practiced or competed from Division I to Division III status; OR c)The student's original four-year institution never sponsored the sport on the intercollegiate level while the student was in attendance at the institution.

10. A student who transfers from a four-year institution is eligible for athletics aid upon transfer only if he/she would have been academically eligible to compete if he/she had remained at the previous institution. True Per Bylaw , a transfer student from a four-year institution may receive athletics aid during his/her first academic year at the certifying institution only if he/she would have been academically eligible to compete during the next regular academic term had the student-athlete remained at the previous institution.

11. A student who transfers from a four-year institution may be immediately eligible for practice and competition under which of the following circumstances? C. Either A or B Bylaw sets forth the return to original institution without participation or minimal participation exception, whereby a student would be immediately eligible upon transfer back to his/her original institution provided he/she does not compete at the second institution and does not engage in other CARA in the involved sport at the second institution beyond a 14-consecutive-day period.

Bylaw sets forth the two-year nonparticipation or minimal participation exception, whereby the student would be immediately eligible if he/she transfers to the certifying institution from another four-year college and, for a consecutive two- year period immediately prior to the date on which the student begins participation, the student has not competed in intercollegiate competition and has not engaged in other CARA in intercollegiate athletics in the involved sport beyond a 14-consecutive-day period, or has neither practiced nor competed in organized noncollegiate amateur competition while enrolled as a full-time student in a collegiate institution.

Two-Year Transfer Rules

Bylaw A two-year transfer who was not a qualifier is eligible for institutional financial aid, practice and competition the first academic year in residence only if the student: (a) Has graduated from the two-year college; (b) Has completed satisfactorily a minimum of 48 semester/72 quarter hours of transferable-degree credit, including 6 semester/8 quarter hours of English credit, 3 semester/4 quarter hours of math credit and 3 semester/4 quarter hours of natural/physical science credit; (c) Has attended a two-year college as a full-time student for at least 3 semesters/4 quarters (excluding summer terms); and (d) Has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of (after 8/1/12, 2.0 before 8/1/12).

Bylaw On or after August 1, A two-year transfer who was not a qualifier is eligible for institutional financial aid and practice the first academic year in residence only if the student: (a) Has graduated from the two-year college; (b) Has completed satisfactorily a minimum of 48 semester/72 quarter hours of transferable-degree credit, including 6 semester/8 quarter hours of English credit, 3 semester/4 quarter hours of math credit and 3 semester/4 quarter hours of natural/physical science credit; (c) Has attended a two-year college as a full-time student for at least 3 semesters/4 quarters (excluding summer terms); and (d) Has achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of

14. A transfer student from a two-year institution who was a qualifier is eligible for competition in his/her first academic year in residence if which of the following conditions are met? D. All of the above Per Bylaw , a two-year transfer who was a qualifier is eligible for competition in his/her first academic year only if the student: a)Has spent at least one full-time semester or one full- time quarter in residence at the two-year college (excluding summer sessions); b)Has presented a minimum GPA of 2.5 (after 8/1/12)/2.0 GPA (before 8/1/12); AND c)Has satisfactorily completed an average of at least 12-semester/quarter hours of transferable-degree credit for each full-time term of attendance at the two-year college.

B. 25% Per Bylaw , when a student-athlete has been in residence at two or more two-year colleges, the terms of residence at all two-year colleges may be combined in determining eligibility. At least 25% of the credit hours used to fulfill the student's academic degree requirements must be earned at the two-year college that awards the degree.

C. 9 Per Bylaw , a student may not earn more than 9 semester/13.5 quarter hours of transferable degree credit during the summer term immediately prior to his/her transfer.

19. A two-year transfer may practice, but not compete or receive athletics aid for a period of how many days prior to receipt and certification of the student’s official academic record? C. 45 Per Bylaw , if a two-year college transfer student reports for athletics participation before the student's academic record has been certified, the student may practice, but not compete, during a 45-day period, provided the student meets all other requirements to be eligible to practice. An institution shall not provide athletics aid to the student during this period.

4-2-4 Transfer Rules

20. A transfer must earn an AA in order to be immediately eligible for competition upon enrollment at the four-year institution. True Per Bylaw , a transfer must serve a year in residence at the second four-year institution before competing unless the student has: (a) Completed an average of at least 12- semester/quarter hours of transferable degree credit, with a cumulative minimum grade-point average of 2.00 (before 8/1/12)/2.5 (after 8/1/12), for each term of full-time attendance at the two- year college;

Bylaw cont’d… (b) One calendar year has elapsed since the student's departure from the previous four-year college; AND (c) The student has graduated from the two- year college (earned an AA degree).

21. One calendar year must elapse between the time a transfer left the initial four-year institution and he/she represents the certifying institution in intercollegiate competition. True Per Bylaw , the calendar year specified in Bylaw does not have to elapse prior to the student’s initial enrollment as a regular student in the second four-year institution, but the calendar year must elapse before the student represents the certifying institution in intercollegiate competition. For example, SA withdraws from initial four-year institution on 9/26/14, enrolls at JC for S15 and earns an AA. SA enrolls at SJSU F15, he/she may receive aid and practice but may not compete until 9/27/15.

2T & 4-2-4T Rules

22. A 2T or 4-2-4T student who was a nonqualifier may transfer to SJSU prior to completing coursework for his/her AA. True Per Bylaws & , the transfer requirements must be met prior to a student- athlete's transfer to the certifying institution. If a student transfers to a member institution prior to completion of applicable transfer requirements, the student is subject to the one-year residence requirement at the certifying institution. No practice, competition or aid in this case.

23. How many credit hours of physical education activity course work may 2T & 4-2-4T students use to fulfill transferable- degree credit and GPA requirements? A. 2 Per Bylaws & , not more than two credit hours of physical education activity courses may be used to fulfill the transferable-degree credit and grade-point average requirements. Exception for SJSU

2-Year Transfer 1) Decipher whether the student was a qualifier/non-qualifier out of high school –Non-qualifier will need AA degree and 6 units of transferable English, 3 units of natural/physical science and 3 units of transferable Math if they enrolled full-time after August 1, ) Identify clock start (full-time enrollment does include any “withdrawals”) 3) Identify number of full-time semesters

2-Year Transfer (cont.) 4) Identify percentage needed due to number of full-time semesters (percentage requirements equate to an average of 12 transferable units per full-time semester) 5) Verify transferable GPA (must be 2.50) 6) Verify that the student passed 6 units the previous semester (Winter and Summer do not count)

2-Year Transfer (cont.) 7) All transfer eligibility requirements need to be met prior to enrolling at San Jose State University or the student will need to sit a year of residency (i.e.. student cannot take an SJSU summer school course to satisfy %, 2.00 GPA, or their units requirements)

Upper Division Transfer (minimally 60 transferable units) Items needed for admissions –Official junior college or 4-year institution transcripts –Student must have Golden Four (College English, College Math, Speech, and Critical Thinking); Golden Four must have a grade of C or better –If student is missing any Golden Four requirements, they will need to go through the SJSU TAG Process. * Please note: student may need to take the ELM/EPT if they do not have College English and Math completed with a C or better
