Teacher plan – Lesson 3 – Your hospital - Intensive care 5 minutes – starter discussion - how many things can be sensed in a hospital? 5 minutes – video on new technology in hospital. (if you find another video please put it in, I found them hard to find. 5 minutes – teacher led discussion on LED and thermistor 5 minutes – read books pages these pages are good. 15 minutes – Talk less teaching - plasticine model the uses of physics to sense in hospitals. In groups of minutes – Talk less teaching - Write up Teacher to take away the information but leave the plasticine and allow groups to draw/write a page about it in their books. 5 minutes – interactive check from the last 3 lessons. It can be found in Kerboodle.

If you feel uncomfortable doing work on hospitals because you have had/ are having a bad experience with yourself or a relative, please let your teacher know so you can sit outside. We will not do anything gruesome but there are photos of people in intensive care.

We are lucky to have such sophisticated hospitals in the UK and physics has been at the forefront. How many things can you think of that are measured and controlled in a hospital automatically?

Describe how a thermistor detects changes in temperature Describe how hospitals use sensors Compare and evaluate how sensors can be used in hospitals Keyword Thermistor

Last lesson we learnt about this. What is it and what was it used for?

A thermistor is a temperature- dependent resistor. How can we use a thermistor in a circuit to monitor temperature? Hint: Think about how LDRs can be used in circuits to monitor light levels. This is controlled by temperature. What is it called? How does it work?

 Get in groups of 5.  Each person choose one of 5 ways technology is used in a hospital heartbeat, defribrillator, ventilator, pacemaker, incubator (harder), pulse rate (harder)  Each person make a playdough modes to describe how sensors are used  Explain/animate to your group how your technology is used.  Try to include an explanation about how each sensor works.

Extra activity instead of playdough

 Produce a patient leaflet to describe how sensors are used around the hospital.  This leaflet should reassure patients of how technology is used.  Try to include an explanation about how each sensor works.
