Presentation transcript:

 Service Learning, to me, is the activity citizens do voluntarily to help better the environment and to learn certain things about the environment. It allows the citizen to give back to the community and to reach to those who need their help.

 The Second Harvest Food Bank  Ronald McDonald House  Lowndes County 911 Center  Lowndes County Animal Shelter  Make a Wish Foundation  American Cancer Society  Humane Society  W.G. Nunn Elementary School  American Red Cross

 The Second Harvest Food Bank is a private non-profit organization that collects and distributes more than 30 million pounds of food each year to low- income children, adults and seniors.  Through the Second Harvest Food Bank, I served meals to the needy during Thanksgiving. It was not the most appetizing job, but it was worth it!

 The mission of Ronald McDonald House is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.  Through the Ronald McDonald, I provided support to the children and families in need. This is my sorority’s philanthropy. Last year we raised over $14,000 through Hoops –N- Hogs.

 The Lowndes County 911/Emergency Management Center provides 911 emergency-call answering service, dispatching service for all emergency response service (fire, law enforcement, and ambulance) and emergency management planning and coordination.  Through the Lowndes County 911 Center, I was able to witness people helping other citizens in time of trial and obstacles. I was not able to do any hands on things, but that was probably for the best.

 The Lowndes County Animal Shelter is committed to building lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach programs and the prevention of cruelty.  Through the Lowndes County Animal Shelter, I was able to adopt my favorite pet rabbit, “Tinkers.” I was also fortunate enough to clean out the little puppies pen before my adoption.

 Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.  I was able to work at a pageant where the proceeds were donated to the Make a Wish Foundation.

 The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.  Through the American Cancer Society, I participated in Relay for Life. Through Relay for Life we raised money. My sorority has a theme called “Purple Potty.” One morning you might wake up with a bright purple potty sitting in your front yard. For a small fee, Alpha Delta Pi will get the potty out of your yard. The fee that was paid will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

 The Humane Society is a group of concerned individuals who came together and established an organization which has grown to over 900 members. Many volunteers work out of the goodness of their hearts. Many are involved in helping hurt or stranded animals in the community. Some members provide foster homes for animals until good permanent homes can be found, and others stay busy with the never ending task of fundraising.  Through the Humane Society, I helped stranded animals find loving homes. I raised over $400 through a carwash with my sorority for the Humane Society. I am now on the Lowndes County Humane Society’s fundraising team. I get an annual newsletter each month.

 The mission of W.G. Nunn Elementary School is to provide every child with a variety of opportunities for academic and personal growth that will build a foundation for learning and success.  Through W.G. Nunn I was able to get to know some of the third grades through Jump Rope for Heart. I was able to dance and play around with the children.

 The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  Through the American Red Cross, I was able to work with those who were generous enough to give blood. Although last time I tried to give blood, I fainted. So, I tried to give back to the American Red Cross by just helping with the Blood Drive.

 Meeting new people  Helping other people  Self-satisfaction  WORTH IT!

 “Stinky” jobs  Time consuming

 It has taught me that everyone does not have the opportunities that I have been presented with. Through my community service, I realized that I have been blessed with so many things. I have a home with a loving family. I also have a meal every night. Others can not say they have these things. Service Learning has made me very thankful for what I have.
