Welcome to SIA Unit 4 Observing Standards-in-Action

Entering Activity There are three flip chart questions posted around the room Grab a marker on the table and write an answer to each question on the flip charts

Purpose and Background Refer to Handout #01 – Course Map  Considering the purpose and goals from your reading of SIA Unit 4, “What do you expect to know and be able to do after completing the Observing Standards-in- Action process?” Write your answer on a 5x7 notecard from the middle of your table.

Observation Process Refer to HO #02 Program Application Pre-Observation Meeting 1.First Observation 2.Share result with a coach 3.Conduct remaining observations 4.Tabulate results 5.Post to Angel by March 21 st

Five Effective Teaching and Learning Practices Turn to page Unit 4-5 in the SIA handbook Refer to Handout #03 – Three-page card stock in the center of the table. 2 sets of colored cards (5 pink and 5 yellow) In pairs, Match the “Evidence” pink cards to the correct Effective Teaching and Learning practice under the “Evidence” column on the handout. Match the “Evidence that Professional Development is Needed yellow cards to the correct Teaching and Learning practice under “Evidence That Professional Development is Needed” column on the handout.

Conduct an Observation Refer to: Handout #04 –SIA Observation Tool the Video Viewing Guide- Content Area: ESL You will be watching a video of an ESL lesson. As you watch the video, take notes on what you see taking place, keeping the indicators of the five Effective Teaching and Learning Practices in mind. When the video is paused, transfer your notes to Handout #04 -the Observation Tool. Refer to the Video Viewing Guide if necessary

Conduct an Observation Refer to: Handout #04 –SIA Observation Tool The Video Viewing Guide- Content Area: Mathematics You will be watching a video of a Math lesson. As you watch the video, take notes on what you see taking place, keeping the indicators of the five Effective Teaching and Learning Practices in mind. After the video has ended, transfer your notes to Handout #04 -the Observation Tool. Refer to the Video Viewing Guide if necessary

Observation Guidelines Refer to the SIA Handbook page Unit 4-39 Review the guidelines.  Identify one thing you believe will be automatic in implementing  Identify one thing you think may be challenging  Discuss with those at your table

Aggregating the Data Refer to the Aggregation of Observation Data Form Appendix B (Unit 4-24) and Appendix D (Unit 4-28) in the SIA handbook Refer to Handout #05 – Aggregation of Data Form Scores for the first four observations have been recorded Record the scores from the ESL and Mathematics observations Tabulate the percentages

Summarizing the Data Refer to the Summary of Observation Data Form Appendix C (Unit 4-26) and Appendix E (Unit 4-31) in the SIA handbook Refer to HO #06 – Summary of Observation Data Form Transfer the results from the aggregated data to the summary Complete Part A and Part B identifying two or three priorities for “Evidence” and “Evidence Professional Development is Needed” from the ESL and Mathematics observations.
