How to Complete A Lab Report
Presentation transcript:

One paragraph 18 pitch Hypothesis Sentence- 18 pitch Abstract See guidelines for Abstract Title of Experiment Titles should be creative and the letter size large This is a report on the topic of the experiment. Pitch size should be either 10 or 12. The layout of the background report on the board is student preference. Procedure The procedure is a detailed step by step process of your experiment. List steps vertically with numbers. Use pitch Data Computer graphs. Include one paragraph of data analysis Conclusion One paragraph. Include recommendations 18 pitch Background DATA NOTEBOOK Either a spiral or stapled pages with a cover sheet of “Data Notebook” to display in front of the board. This contains all collected experimentation results. Purpose Science Fair Intro & Refresher

Why Science Fair  Applied science  Enhancement of critical thinking and problem solving skills  Development of presentation skills

Project Planning Develop a project plan with your child  experimentation  project assembly

FORMS  Required for all projects  Certain projects require prior approval before experimenting ISEF Students Upload forms to S: drive on Abington Network upload pathway upload pathway (shared/student work/Science Fair Paperwork 2011/teacher folder) We can lick gravity, but sometimes the paperwork is overwhelming. ~Wernher von Braun

Purpose Reason for research and experimentation! Make science come alive Get and give! We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~Winston Churchill

Engineering Projects Somewhat different format. Please review ISEF website info and talk with/ Mr. Keller or Mrs. Grande. nt.doc?id=12 A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. ~Freeman Dyson

Variables Independent- manipulated during experiment Dependent- results (report in data analysis) Control- validate experiment Extraneous- whoops! Need to mitigate; otherwise retest. One person’s constant is another person’s variable. ~Alan Perlis

Fertilizer effect on Marigold Growth Independent Variable 2% fertilizer mix 5% fertilizer mix 10% fertilizer mix Dependent Variable Growth rate (cm) Control Variable 0% fertilizer mix Potting containers Amount of H 2 O (mL) Sun exposure Extraneous Variable Animal Age of seeds Health of soil

Research Discussion of topic, purpose and/or variables 2-3 typed pages in MLA format Research is creating new knowledge. ~Neil Armstrong

Hypothesis Prediction based on research Numerically based! Include variables The only relevant test of the validity of a hypothesis is comparison of prediction with experience. ~Milton Friedman

Fertilizer effect on Marigold Growth Marigolds grown in the 10% fertilizer mix will have a 25% higher growth rate than marigolds grown in 2 or 5% fertilizer mix.

Procedure Detailed, step by step directions METRIC measurements not standard (U.S.A.) You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change… the procedure, the process is its own reward. ~Amelia Earhart

Data Collection Data notebook in 2D –Dated –Detailed Trials and trials!!! In the spirit of science, there really is no such thing as a "failed experiment." Any test that yields valid data is a valid test. ~Adam Savage

Plant Projects to Include: 1.10 containers of each fertilizer mix 2. Soil and fertilizer measured in grams 3.Water amount in mL

Data Analysis Discussion of variables and data collection Reference graphs and tables (computerized) Digital imagery Get the habit of analysis - analysis will in time enable synthesis to become your habit of mind. ~Frank Lloyd Wright

Conclusion Accuracy of hypothesis Recommendations for change Impact I think and think for months and years. Ninety-nine times, the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right. ~Albert Einstein

Display Professional- no tape, hand writing/drawing Use photos- no faces Limit colors for matting Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself. ~Paul Bryant

Parental Input Your role: - Refine project components - Lab assistant - Typist; glue artist You [do] not help another by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. ~Abraham Lincoln

Resources Online Pathway: Abington Schools/Junior High Academics Departments Science Any questions, please or talk with science teacher!!!
