What is a Thesis Statement? A thesis statement is like a controller for the Xbox 360® or PlayStation 3®. When you are playing a video game, what would happen if the controller was disconnected from the game console? Your character would probably die and you would lose the game! Well, it’s the same thing with your thesis statement. If you don’t put a thesis statement in your essay, your essay will die, and you will lose your audience. The key to winning in the game of writing is having a well-built thesis statement.

Step 1- Understand the Prompt Read the writing prompt carefully and determine what is being asked of you Example Writing Prompt: There are many cartoons on television. Some people watch cartoons for their comedic value, while others watch cartoons for the hidden political symbols. Describe your favorite cartoon and explain why you watch it.

Step 2- Answer the Prompt Choose what cartoon (topic) you will describe and why you like it Example: Favorite Cartoon- SpongeBob Squarepants 1. Spongebob is always getting into trouble. 2. Squidward hates everybody. 3. Bikini bottom is an exciting place to live.

Step 3- Put it in a sentence or two After you’ve decided what your answer is for the prompt and why- you are ready to write your thesis Model Thesis Statement- “SpongeBob Squarepants” is the best cartoon on television. Everyone should watch it because Spongebob is always getting into trouble, Squidward hates everybody, and Bikini Bottom is an exciting place to live. Notice* I never use “I” in my thesis even though it is my opinion!! Very important.
