Avon Intermediate School Student Safety Procedures Training 2014-2015

Answer these questions with your shoulder partner about fire drills 1. The law requires that schools complete fire drills, how often? 2 times a year? Weekly? Monthly? 2. Besides the alarm sounding, what happens when the fire alarm is pulled? Everyone takes cover in the locker room? Everyone leaves the building? The principal and assistant principal call the fire department? 3. There have been very few deaths caused by school fires in the United States, why do you think this is? share your thoughts with a shoulder partner

In the event of a fire at school, do you know what to do? In the event of a fire in the school, do you know what to do? Students should alert a staff member if they smell smoke or see a fire in the building The staff member will immediately call the office and/or pull the fire alarm. The alarm sends a signal straight to the Avon Fire Department and will trigger the fire alarm to evacuate all students and staff. There has not been a major school fire with student deaths/injuries since 1958. Why? Because schools are required by law to practice fire drills monthly. They have yearly inspections, ample safety equipment (fire alarms, fire extinguishers, fire proof building materials) In other words, students and adults have practiced and are prepared!

Lockdown procedures We hope that this presentation and more practice will help staff and students be better prepared for situations that would cause the school to go on lockdown There are two kinds of lockdowns for Avon schools. 1. An exterior lockdown is used when there is something happening in the community, for example- burglary, police are looking for someone, etc These types of lockdowns should not stop teaching and learning. 2. A full school lockdown is used when there is an intruder in the building or on the school property. All teaching and learning stops until the all clear is announced.

Lockdown Type #1 Secure the building . Avon Schools have two different kinds of lockdown procedures. Type #1 1. “Staff and students, please secure the building” is the announcement you would hear if the school had to lockdown the outside of the school. This announcement would mean that all students at recess would need to come inside classes continue as planned but classroom doors are locked students are with a teacher at all times No adults or students would be allowed to come into the school or leave the school until the lockdown was over.

Lockdown Type #2 Lockdown of the building due to intruder The office staff will alert staff and students that a lockdown is necessary with this announcement: “Staff and students need to lockdown their classrooms, there is an intruder” At this point, all students in the hallways, restrooms, locker bay will need to go the nearest classroom, even if it is not your classroom. Students and staff will lock and barricade main classroom doors with desks, chairs. Lights are turned off and students/staff should find a hiding place and listen to instructions. Students should listen to adults for directions; leaving the building and running to a safe place is an option. These safe places are called rally points. If students and staff leave the building they should report directly to the rally points discussed with teacher during training/drills.

A.L.I.C.E. ALICE is a training tool to help students and staff know how to be more prepared if there is ever an intruder in their school. Here is a video about ALICE made by Hanover High School in southern Indiana. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_5wl041T4Q After watching this video, talk as a class about what you saw. Were there items you had questions about? What were the most important items you heard?

Lockdown procedures for Intermediate school students and staff Answer these questions based on the information you heard today 1. Compare and contrast the two different types of lockdowns (teacher makes list or graphic organizer on the board) 2. Discuss the concept of rally points (give students the locations of your school’s rally points) 3. Create a list of the top 5 things students can do to keep safe before, during or after a lockdown. #1 on this list should be: Report any rumors or reports of weapons on school grounds!
