Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern App Choices Good app choices not only dynamically present course content, they are equally important in facilitating the learning process. You’re encouraged to actively participate in this session from your iPad by clicking on the link below. To be added to Dropbox for this session, send an request to:

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Project Goal Audi Electronic Diagnosis pilots the idea of delivering technical training curriculum in a more interactive, engaging, and hands-on way in an instructor-led environment using tablets and educational apps. The mLearning project also tests the effectiveness of a “paperless” mobile learning environment and how that blends with other mLearning initiatives.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Timeline Approximately four months to develop from contract award (July 2012). Approximately seven months from initial discussion to actual pilot (September 2012). Initial Course Evaluation - Davey, Florida October 23 - October 26, 2012 Pilot - Ontario, California January 29 - February 1, nd Pilot - Ashburn, Virginia April 2 - April 5, 2013

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Challenge In our pilot, we started the course by explaining how to use the iPad, demonstrating several apps, and discussing ways to take notes. We even had a note taking app, as this was a 100% paperless course! We observed that this was not only overwhelming for many of the techs but a challenge for the instructor as well. From this observation, we were challenged to streamline the use of apps.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern iBooks and iBooks Author On January 19, 2012, at an education-focused special event in New York City, Apple announced the free release of iBooks 2. In addition, a new application, iBooks Author, was announced for the Mac App Store, allowing anyone to create interactive textbooks for reading in iBooks; and the iBookstore was expanded with a textbook category. iBooks Author is an amazing new app that allows anyone to create beautiful multi-touch textbooks — and just about any other kind of book — for iPad. With galleries, video, interactive diagrams, 3D objects, and more, these books bring content to life in ways the printed page never could.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Notes and Annotations Several productivity apps were piloted and evaluated to allow for annotating documents, highlighting text, making notes, drawing, adding pictures and other multimedia, and saving these changes. Notability and iOS Notes > iBooks Notes Goodreader > PDF Expert

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Apple TV Fosters collaboration between the instructor and students. Using the iPad’s AirPlay functionality not only can the instructor present, but at anytime any one student can be called upon to ‘mirror’ their iPad display to the classroom projection system. Pretty awesome!

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Student Response System Socrative is used to engage the entire class with quizzes, educational exercises, and games while capturing student results in real-time. Interact with the data to further student understanding. Delivery and developing training curriculum in a mobile environment is much more dependent on the underlying software it runs on. iResponse > Socrative > iBooks

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Smart Flashcards Brainscape is a web and mobile education platform that helps you learn subjects as efficiently as possible, based on solid cognitive science. Brainscape uses an optimized version of spaced repetition that they call Confidence-Based Repetition. Brainscape > iBooks

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern 3D Models Used to interact with engineering 3D models. These models allow for greater interactions by the technicians than what is currently possible within iBooks. Great app for visual learners! eDrawings > SAP Visual Enterprise (VE) Viewer

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Space Race Student teams answer questions in a rocket-themed race game. The team that gets its rocket the farthest across the screen wins! Socrative

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern ImmersedDocs The Audi SSP app enables Audi dealership and Corporate personnel to access and search all of their Self-Study Programs (SSPs) that have been developed over the last 10 – 15 years on mobile devices. Key information is often found in seconds compared to upwards of hours searching corporate intranets. ImmersedDocs

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Bretford PowerSync Cart The PowerSync cart is used to store, charge and sync iPads for the entire class. The cart can hold up to 30 iPads, and they all can charge at once. When used in conjunction with the MacBook Pro, updates to apps can be rolled to all devices at one time. In addition to offering security, the PowerSync cart and MacBook Pro save the instructor time managing configurations of multiple iPads.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern MacBook Pro and Dropbox In addition to its usage with the PowerSync Cart, the MacBook Pro can be used to view students' tests and worksheets, access other learning material and 'mirror' that content to the classroom projection system, as well as access web portals used in conjunction with several apps. Dropbox is a cloud-based storage solution that lets you bring all your photos, documents, and videos anywhere and share them easily. There are several ways to approach Dropbox in a mobile learning environment. We chose a hybrid approach.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern University of California Irvine A recent study of University of California Irvine medical school students reported iPad-equipped medical students scored 23 percent higher on national exams than previous unequipped classes. Numerous studies are showing the iPad’s effectiveness in learning. The more students are engaged, the better they retain the information they are exposed to, which results in greater learning.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Pepperdine University In August 2010, Pepperdine University launched a three- term study to assess the iPad's potential in the education sector.

107 Choosing the Right Apps to Support a Tablet-based Training Curriculum by Mike Brock and Paul Kern Critiques and Exit Interviews Given a choice, all 22 technicians would prefer the iPad course over its equivalent paper-based course. The technicians and instructor did not feel the technology interfered with learning. The instructor was better able to validate and verify the courses’ stated learning objectives. The technicians felt better engaged throughout the four-day pilot, resulting in better learning experiences.
