The AfriChild Centre Centre of Excellence on the African Child David Mugawe Executive Director The AfriChild Centre

BACKGROUND AfriChild was established in January 2013 in Uganda. The AfriChild Centre is a product of the Uganda Program Learning Group of the Child Protection in Crisis (CPC) Network.   The AfriChild Centre works to improve child protection practice and inform policy through a systematic process of scientific research, analysis, and knowledge development.

PARTNERS The AfriChild Centre was established by six partners, namely: Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development UNICEF-Uganda ChildFund International, Uganda Columbia University Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) TPO Uganda

Why The AfriChild Centre? The Triangle Academia Policy Makers CSO/Actors/Practioners

Some of AfriChild’s short-term plans Commission training for Child Wellbeing/Child Protection researchers in basic research, programming, and policy advocacy Establish a network of mentors to ensure quality control, scientific research methodologies, rigorous data analysis and the production of reports of international standards Produce a report on major knowledge/capacity gaps on issues related to Child Focus Programming

Some of AfriChild’s short-term plans Implement (with other partners) the Violence against Children in Uganda Study Produce training materials/curricular tailored to address existing capacity gaps Engage with projects that can provide access to their project sites for purposes of learning, absorption and utilisation of research findings Hold advocacy dialogue meetings with key government departments and other actors on how they can utilise research findings for policy development and planning

Conclusion Overall, The AfriChild Centre aims to: be a leading multidisciplinary training and research centre contribute to knowledge building and skills development influence policy, programming and practice concerning the wellbeing of the African child
