INDEX Background of Sunflower House Why are we as Brebner doing this? When was sunflower house established? Challenges in regards to eeping and maintaining the house. Gian Sunflower. Funds received from Brebner. World Cup 2010-09-15 Future ideas to raise funds. INDEX INDEX

BACKGROUND OF SUNFLOWER HOUSE AND BREBNER HIGH SCHOOL Sunflower House is situated on the National Hospital’s premises. It is a place of safety and care for children suffering from Life-threatening and Life-Limiting conditions lie HIV/AIDS, cancer and disability. At this stage 26 children are being taken care of in this facility. The facility is dependent on state subsidies and donations from individuals and businesses. Sunflower House has been receiving donations and support from Brebner High School for past five years. This was made possible by the Interact Club and the RCL committee which is headed by Mrs. Jabaar and Mrs. Jusjong. The School has donated money, food, clothes and toys. The Sunflower House also gets regular visits from the members of the Interact and RCL.

WHY ARE WE AS BREBNER DOING THIS? At Brebner we’re a family and we care for each otherand for out community. Our initiative with this project is to reach out to the needy and mae a difference and lend a helping hand. To teach our Learners to open their eyes to the problems we face and find solutions. To create a norm of empathetic and sympathetic people.

SINCE YOUR ESTABLISHMENT, HAVE YOU HAD SUFFICIENT SUPPORT FROM SOCIETY?   The support is never enough and we need additional support. Most of our children are orphans, at the moment we have 1 000 patients over the Free State. There is an ever increasing need!

HOW MANY CHILDREN HAS THE HOUSE TAKEN CARE OF AND HOW MANY ARE YOU TAKING CARE OF NOW? The come and go, about22 000 have died and all were terminally ill.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES THAT YOU FACE IN REGARDS TO KEEPING AND MAINTAINING THE HOUSE?   Our premises are broken and its an ongoing problem. Funding difficulties, usually funders fund as for 3 years and then they stop, its inconsistent.

FIRST TERM TUCKSHOP Due to the hard work of Debbiet at the hostel, weare able to run a successful tuch-shop and cater to the needs of the learners. Interact members eagerly perform their duties and we are well supported. On 26 February we had an income of R15341 and thus showed a profit of R6 136,40. Our projected figure for the end of the term is a profit of R9 800. CIVIES DAT Valentines Day is the only civvies day that is allowed at school. All the learners and staff wore red to support learners infected and affected by AIDS. A R5,00 donation was requested. We managed to raise R5 000,00. all this money was donated to Sunflower Hospice. SOUP ITCHEN On Wednesday 03 March, our grade 12 learners visited a soup kitchen in Heidedal run by Ma Williams. We donated the meat and vegetables. Our learners cleaned and shopped up vegetables and helped cook2 big pots of food. RYLA CAMP Zane Dunn, a gr. 11 learner was chosen to go to the RYLA camp and was sponsored by Rotary, Bloemfontein. He thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and did us proud. RYLA is a youth and development program. Brebner learners are sponsored almost every year and accompanyt Grey College and St. Andrews.

SECOND TERM We continued selling sandwiches at the tuck chop and made a profit of R5 000. Learners are active and are eager to participate. A cheque to the value of R2000 was handed to Pholoho Special School for the mentally disabled. They will use this money where it is most needed. We also donated a cheque of R2000 to SAGA (the South Afri8can Guide Dogs association). Last week we ha a most enjoyable outing. Along with a few learners on the ‘rehabilitation programme’ we visited Tswellang Special School in Phahameng. This school caters for the physically and mentally disabled learners. This collaboration was aimed at helping our learners be more appreciative and also realize that, despite obstacles, you can make a success of your life. We donated a cheque of R2000 as well as clothes, toys and blankets that we received from our learners. The teachers at the school went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to show us around. Mr. Taylor suggested activities day to promote the 2010 world cup. Five rand donations were collected and the money will be used to buy a soccer and netball kit for a struggling school.

THIRD TERM We continued selling sandwiches at the tuck Shop. On the 11 of August the grade 11 RCL and Interact members went to a soup kitchen in the Pieter Swarts Squatter Camp. The girls chopped the vegetables while the boys started a fire. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to have many more outings of this nature. This soup kitchen feed 300 – 400 kids every Wednesday. Learners are still bringing in clothes and tin food as we intend donating these as soon as we have enough.
