Pre-Algebra Order of Operations Day 2

What Are You Learning? I CAN evaluate word problems using the order of operations.

Why Do You Need To Know This? Using the order of operations to solve word problems is important because these problems apply to may real world situations. If the order of operations is not applied correctly, the answer will be incorrect.

Back to School Sale Your school bookstore’s prices are shown below. You purchase 5 folders, 3 notebooks, and a calculator. Write an expression that represents your total cost. Then simplify the expression to find out how much money you will spend. Folder--$.50 Highlighter--$1.49 Notebook--$2.25 Calculator--$5.99

Let’s Go Eat!! Mr. Perdue took his family out to eat. They ordered three meals costing $8.99 each, two sodas at $1.50 each, and one glass of tea for $1.25. Write an expression to find the total amount the Perdue family spent on dinner and then evaluate the expression.

Let’s Go to the Movies You and three friends go to the movies. The group has $40 total. The cost per ticket is $5.25. Each person wants a large soda for $1.25 each, and a box of candy for $1.15 each. Two of the four are willing to share a large buttered popcorn for $3.75 and the other two are going to share a medium unbuttered popcorn for $3.00. Write an expression that represents the total. How much money did the group spend? How much money remains?

I Smell a Sale!! A store has certain software on sale at 3 for $20, with a limit of 3 at the sale price. Additional software is available at the regular price of $9.95 each. a.Write an expression you could use to find the cost of 5 software packages. b.How much would 5 software packages cost?

Bacteria Most bacteria reproduce by dividing into identical cells. This process is called binary fission. A certain type of bacteria can double its numbers every 20 minutes. Suppose 100 of these cells are in one culture dish and 250 of the cells are in another culture dish. Write and evaluate an expression that shows the total number of bacteria in both dishes after 20 minutes.

Make Mine a Large!! At a local coffee house, coffee can be purchased by the pound. Megan buys 3 pounds of Mexican coffee priced $5 per pound. Nick buys 7 pounds of Spanish coffee priced at $9 per pound. How much more did Nick spend than Megan?

Let’s Get To Work!! As a 16 year old, Trent Eisenberg ran his own consulting company called F1 Computer. Suppose he charged a flat fee of $50, plus $25 per hour. One day he worked 2 hours for one customer and the next day he worked 3 hours for the same customer. Write an expression and find the total amount of money he earned.
