To develop new varieties with increased resistance to disease and pests; more drought tolerant; stay fresh longer; increase yield etc. 3.What are the advantages of GM crops? Farmers do not have to use as much pesticides and chemicals on their crops. More yield – more food, less expensive; crops with added proteins, vitamins etc. Longer shelf life for vegetables. 4.How is potato or soybean genetically modified? Genes from fish or other plants are added to pure potato or soybean DNA to produce transgenic potato or soybean.
