Essential Question: How can I improve my BCR writing skills Essential Question: How can I improve my BCR writing skills? Standard: Write Routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

ATTACK THE PROMPT!!! Underline the nouns Circle the verbs Format: Expository, Informative, Argumentative (a poem, a letter, an essay, an editorial, etc.) Audience: (community, teacher, parent, scorer or rater, friend, etc.) Topic: (look at your nouns – which one are you writing about?) How does the prompt limit you? What can you NOT do? In a Simple statement, explain what is being asked of you. (Put together the F + A + T = S) (FATS) Is there a counter argument? If so, what’s the counter argument?

Example In this section, you will read about the ongoing debate over the use of genetically modified (GM) food. What are the benefits and dangers of producing and consuming foods that have been genetically modified? You will write an argumentative essay in your own words supporting either side of the debate in which you argue for or against the use of GM food. Format: Argumentative Essay Audience: Reader Topic: The use of genetically modified foods are beneficial/are harmful (choose a side) ***Simple Statement: Write an argumentative essay about how the use of genetically modified foods are beneficial/harmful.

TPPR – another approach Topic: What is the topic of the document? What does the document discuss? Point: What is the point that the author is trying to make? Purpose: Why is the author writing this? Go beyond, “inform,” “entertain,” and “argue” be specific! Reflection: How does the text make you feel?

Say, Mean, Matter – yet another approach Say: What does the document say? What is your fact? Quote or summarize the text. Mean: What does the “say” mean? What inferences can you make from the quote/summary? How can you paraphrase your quote and add details to describe what it means? Matter: How does the “say” and “mean” connect to your question? What is the significance of your “say” and “mean” relationship to the question? Connect it back.

What is S SAY MEAN MATTER What is it? An organizer to graph your thoughts: SAY What does the text say? Quote the text Choose text that stands out or confuses you. The quoted text does not have to be actual quotations, it can be narration or description. MEAN Interpretation. What does the text mean? Read between the lines. Explain the quote in the context of the text. Identify any rhetorical devices (simile, metaphor, personification, symbolism, etc.) used. MATTER What are the implications? (Possible outcomes or results?) Why does it matter to me or others? Why is it important? What is the significance? What is S

Using this strategy with a text “The modern bourgeois society...has not done away with class antagonisms. It has but established new forms of struggle in place of the old ones. Modern industry has converted the little workshop of the patriarchal master into the great factory of the industrial capitalist. Masses of laborers, crowded into the factory, are organized like soldiers.... They are slaves of the machine and the manufacturer. Instead of rising as industry progresses, they sink deeper and deeper into poverty....” Excerpt from “The Communist Manifesto” by Friederich Engels and Karl Marx, 1848 Say-Copy the quotation or summarize it. Mean- What does the quotation mean? Matter- Why does this quotation matter?
