Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education October 10, 2011 Brent Fryrear, Director Public Partners Promoting Sustainability

History First public partnership of its kind Started August, 2004 Originally to improve  environmental education,  environmental health, and  environmental management Stewardship of tax dollars Environmental Principles  Strengthens Partnership and each Partner’s commitment to sustainability

Partnerships Why public partnerships?  Large employers  Huge number of students  Purchasers of energy, food & products  Given scale, small changes have big impact  Set developmental standards in the community  Positioned to lead by example

Collective Resources Employees 27,500+ Land (acres) 25,135 Buildings 531+ Students135,000+ Vehicles 7,000+ Gas/Diesel use (gallons)12 million+ Annual energy use ($) >$44 million Increasing 5% - 7% per year

Synergies of Partnership Improved education of community Shared expertise Economies of scale Joint research & studies Coordinated fundraising Improved capacity building  Peer to peer, not top-down, advocacy

Definition of Sustainability "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs"(WCED, 1987). Environmental Economic Social

Strategic Vision The Partnership for a Green City envisions Louisville as an innovative national leader for economic sustainability and environmental quality. As members, the Jefferson County Public Schools, Jefferson Community & Technical College, Louisville Government and the University of Louisville make a long- term commitment to lead by example, educate, engage and collaborate with the community.

Mission Statement Inspire and promote a sustainable green city through innovation, collaboration, action and measurable progress.

Strategic Plan Increase influence of Partnership o Collaboration o Revenue enhancement o Advocacy o Research o Measurement Expand influence community- wide Work with Bingham Fellows (& others)

Issues demanding change Climate change Energy costs Budget issues Economic malaise

University of Louisville

Achievements 2007 National Association of Counties Sustainable Communities Award Louisville Smarter Cities 2009 Ranking #21  Louisville Energy Star Partner of the Year 2010 Partnership Climate Action Report Released 2009  Two years, 200 people, community participation  GHG Emissions Inventory  Eight sections  175 recommendations  Goals & objectives for teams

Climate Action Report Highlights Where do greenhouse gases originate?  Industry – 18%  Commercial – 23%  Transportation – 29%  Residential Utility Use – 29%  Waste 1% JCPS, Louisville government and UofL  Generate approximately 5%

Climate Action Report Highlights Climate Data indicates  Daily average low temp slowly increasing Predictions include  Increased frequency of heavy precipitation events  Increased flooding  Increased droughts and heat waves Local Impacts on  Public Health  Infrastructure  Economy

Achievements Green Buildings  Energy Savings Performance Contracts  Energy Star Partners  Energy Awareness can save 15 – 20%  Innovative light shelves  LEED Certified/Energy Star buildings  Wind Turbines and Solar Power

Energy Saving Opportunities Energy Policy – specify equipment Remove instant hot water coffee makers  Save ~$ / year for each Use lap top computers  Save 80% to 90% in electrical costs Screen savers are not energy savers Smart Power Strips  Reduce energy use 72%

Achievements Green Fleets  Right-sized vehicles  Hybrid/alternative fuel vehicles  Biodiesel 2% & 5%  32 Hybrid School Buses  DPF Grants with LMG and JCPS  Promoting alternative transportation vs. 24 M vehicle miles/day

Alternative Transportation Transportation opportunities  Increase public transportation  Increase bicycling & walking  Increase carpool, school pool or van pool Promote not idling more than 10 seconds Anti-idling policies at partners (An hour of idling time in a 4-cylinder vehicle uses more than a gallon of gasoline and more than 4 gallons in an 8-cylinder vehicle. In a diesel vehicle, idling for an hour consumes approximately a gallon of fuel.)

Achievements Green Infrastructure Stormwater MOA  Keep stormwater out of combined sewer  Infrastructure improvements vs. stormwater management fees Local Foods  Increase local foods  Farmer’s Markets and CSAs

Green Issues Orientation Employee Orientation – Sustainability  JCPS Classified employee orientation  UofL new employee orientation  Louisville new employee orientation Professional Development  Dumpster diving  Energy auditing  Sustainability

Green Purchasing New purchasing MOA 2009 Seeking joint contracts  Containerized waste disposal  Bulb & ballast recycling  Electronics Recycling – 2009 (rebid 2011?)  New paper contract – 2010  Hazardous Waste – 2011  Energy efficient replacement lamps (bulbs) 2011  Ink jet and toner cartridge recycling 2011  Green cleaning chemicals (partners)  Mulch/landscaping materials (partners)  Office Supplies (partners) 2011  Road salt

Achievements Urban Forestry  Urban tree canopy plan  Identified storm assessment models  Emerald Ash Borer Waste Management  e-recycling  Single stream recycling  Biodegradable serving ware

Where do we go from here? Implement Partnership strategic plan Seek grant funding for projects Add new public partners? Joan Riehm Award (third year) Immediate Focus  Climate Change  Alternative Transportation  Energy Awareness/Vampire Loads Continue increasing each partner’s sustainability Move Louisville toward Green City status
