Study Guide

Final Exam

Everyone needs training beyond high school. What will yours be? -High school diploma is starting point/admission ticket -College degree -Technical college degree / certificate -Apprenticeship program -Military training -On-the-job training -Self-education

 Is it for everyone?  Why do you want to go?  What will you study?  How will you pay for it?

 Be where you are supposed to be  When you are supposed to be there  Do what you are supposed to do  Use electives to explore opportunities and possible majors

 Apply  On-line (preferred) or paper  College will need three things for acceptance:  1-Application  2-SAT/ACT scores  3-Transcript

 1 – Your transcript is your high school career on paper  2 – How to read it? Found on SHS website  3 – How important is it?  4 – How to use it?  --how to send it  --who has access?

 Both are college admissions tests put out by two different companies. Colleges take either.  ACT  Measures what you have learned  Does not penalize you for guessing  SAT  Measures how well you use what you have learned  Deducts ¼ point from each incorrect answer  (changing next Spring)

 Must fill out FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)  Complete as soon as possible after 1 January  The main application for all state, federal, and college-based financial aid  No college will award you financial aid unless you have been accepted

 Scholarships are based on  1 – Grades  2 – Test scores  3 – Participation  4 – Activities  5- Other (place where you live, skills, talents)  6 – Each scholarship given be a different group who sets criteria  7 – Local scholarships are often easier to get

 1 – Local scholarships are listed on  -SHS website  -SCCPSS website  2 – Scholarship search engines are on:  -  -  -  (links are on the SHS website)

 Must have a final 3.0 GPA in core academic subjects  -English  -Math  -Science  -Social Studies  -Foreign Language  HOPE status may be checked in GaCollege411 account.

 2015 grads – 2 courses from list  2016 grads – 3 courses from list  2017 grads – 4 courses from list  EX: AP, Dual enrollment, Math III, Math IV, Chemistry, Accelerated Math, Anatomy, Physics, Spanish III, etc.

 Must meet criteria from NCAA or NAIA  and register with their Clearinghouses.  Must still apply for all financial aid  Must maintain eligibility in college the same  as in high school  “Broken leg” test

 100 high school athletes – 2 will play college sports at some level  1000 college athletes – 2 will play professional sports  Average NFL career – 3.3 years  Average NBA career – 4.8 years  Statistics will fade away – education will not.

 1 – GaCollege411  2 – SHS website  3 – SCCPSS website
