At school we are taught to read, write, and do some arithmetic, which is like math. We need to learn this because then we can read the bible, write letters to people and keep track of our amount of money. Our town is considered lucky to have a schoolhouse because most towns don’t have one. If we didn’t have a school our parents would teach us some things. Then we would probably have the same job that our father has when we grow up. The schoolhouse consists of one room and one teacher. We use the room as a place to learn and in the winter we eat inside and in the summer we eat outside. A wooden stove heats the room and we have to bring in a log to put on the fire. The kids that are in the classroom are from the ages of six to twelve. We all have to learn our lessons by repeating them over and over--boring. This way helps us remember the lessons better. We learn from a hornbook. It looks like a wooden paddle with a paper attached to it with letters, numbers and maybe a verse from the bible on the paper, I am able to hold it in my hand so it is pretty small. My verse is from John 3:16. arithmetichornbook Make your own Hornbook One of the bad things is that school starts at 7:00 o’clock in the morning. You have to walk all the way from your house to the school Monday through Saturday. Also if you misbehave you may get whipped like little Johnny or have to wear a dunce hat. I once got spanked because I didn’t listen to Mr. Forbes. I write with my quill pen and my black ink. We rarely write on paper because it is so scarce. The paper is made from birch bark. We mainly read a lot from the bible. Make a Quill Pen My friend Brian says he will probably go to boarding school in England because his family is so wealthy. Also my friend Michael will go to grammar school in Williamsburg once he is twelve years old. My poor sister Mary only stayed in school until she knew how to read the bible and keep track of our expenses. I wish she would stay. I think school is hard.

You will have an opportunity to have an outing with the 5 th formers April, 2010 Trinity College Last Monday, the first day back after our Easter holidays was difficult for us as we hadn’t been in school in three weeks. We all walked into our class and the Miss said “We are all going to Trinity College today!” At half nine we left the school and walked to Trinity. We were met by a girl who I named Lucinda Cobweb. She took us into the lecture theatre and there was another boy’s school in there from James Street. A boy called Alistair gave us a bar and some orange juice. We were delighted because we were thirsty from the walk. We were divided into two groups and Alistair was with us. He brought us to the zoology department. The other school got to go and do maths roulette. A man was waiting there to tell us all about extinct, endangered and vulnerable animals in the world. It was very interesting especially when he showed us the huge elephant tooth. The man in charge divided the class into three groups and each group went to the different sections of the room. The first group learned about animal teeth, another group got to make a chimpanzee skeleton and the last group did a quiz on animals. After all our hard work, we rushed down to the canteen and got lots of lovely food. Both schools were brought outside and split up into groups to do a scavenger hunt. We had to go and find different areas of the college to answer the questions. We saw the book of kells, the old library, statues and sculptures there. Finally we all met back together and got a special stamp which means we are trinity citizens. Overall it was a great day which we weren’t expecting. By fifth class.

…And of cause, to sing songs.

Good luck !
