Tamura 11th International Conference on Quasicrystals Sapporo, Japan June 2010 Second Announcement and Call for Abstracts Registration Participants are kindly requested to register in advance, preferably before 1 May Registration Fees For full participants and students the fee includes access to the welcome party on Sunday, the conference excursion on Wednesday (including a lunch box), the conference dinner at the JR Tower Hotel Nikko on Thursday, and a copy of the proceedings. For accompanying persons the fee covers the welcome party, the conference excursion (including a lunch box), and the conference dinner. Jean Marie Dubois Award The Jean Marie Dubois Award was established to recognize important, sustained research on any aspect of quasicrystals within the 10-year period preceding the award. The first award was given at ICQ9, in May 2005, to Prof. An-Pang Tsai of Tohoku University, and the second at ICQ10 in June 2006 to Prof. Walter Steurer of ETH Zürich. The deadline for nominations for the next Award is 1 February For details see the conference web page Conference Secretariat Prof. Tsutomu Ishimasa Division of Applied Physics, Graduate School of Engineering, Hokkaido University Sapporo , Japan phone: fax:

General Information Scope The research field of quasicrystals is growing and expanding in several directions. Structural problems engage crystallographers and mathematicians. The unusual physical properties are still creating challenges for experimental and theoretical physicists as well as computational physicists. New alloy systems including stable binary quasicrystals have been discovered and sample preparation techniques such as single crystal growth have been improved. Material scientists are now trying to establish new engineering fields. Furthermore, there are two new movements. One is expansion from metals or alloys to other quasuperiodic substances, for example ceramics, polymers, aggregate of nano-particles, etc. The other is artificial quasiperiodic systems such as micro-scale structures, light filed, and magnetic field. The conference will provide a forum on all aspects of quasicrystals and related subjects such as approximant or complicated structures as well as new quasiperiodic systems. It will give good opportunity for exchange of ideas, techniques, and experience. ICQ11 continues the series of meetings held at Les Houches (1986), Beijing (1987), Vista- Hermosa (1989), St. Louis (1992), Avignon (1995), Tokyo (1997), Stuttgart (1999), Bangalore (2002), Ames (2005), and Zürich (2008). Topics The program of the conference will cover the following aspects of quasicrystals : (1) Formation, growth and stability (2) Structure and modeling (3) Mathematics (4) Physical properties (5) Surfaces and overlayers (6) Applications (7) Metamaterials (8) Related topics Program Poster sessions and two types of talks will be offered: plenary talks for invited speakers and oral contributions selected by the Program Committee. There will be no parallel sessions. All posters will be accessible during the entire conference. The following three related meetings are planed just before and after the conference. "Strengthening of Magnesium Alloys," organized by A. Singh and T. Mukai: "Surface of Quasicrystals," organized by M. Shimoda: "Mathematics of Quasi-Periodic Order," organized by S. Akiyama, Y. Akama and N. Fujita: For these workshops, please consult each workshop web pages. Call for Abstracts Abstracts should be submitted following the instruction described in the web page: The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 February Prominent work may be selected for a plenary talk or oral contribution. The abstracts will be collected in an abstract book to be distributed during the conference. They will be also accessible on the conference web page. Proceedings Conference proceedings will be published by Taylor and Francis in Philosophical Magazine. For publication, papers must follow the high quality standards of the journal. They will be rigorously refereed. Manuscripts must be submitted not later than 15 May Instructions for authors will be given in due time on the conference web page. Location, Travel, Accommodation Location of the Conference The conference will be held at Hokkaido University (Sapporo Campus). The Conference hall is located near the Main Gate of the campus. You need to walk for 10 minutes from the JR Sapporo station. Sapporo is a city of 1,905,000 inhabitants located in the north islands named “Hokkaido,” and approximately 800 km far from Tokyo. Travel Sapporo (New Chitose) Airport is the nearest to Sapporo, which is the third largest airport in Japan. There is, unfortunately, no direct flight either from Europe, America and India. Then you need to make a connection for Sapporo at Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya. There are a few flights between Tokyo (Narita) and Sapporo (New Chitose). Please ask your travel agency possible connection at Tokyo, Osaka (Kansai) or Nagoya (Chubu). From Sapporo (New Chitose) Airport to Sapporo city, there is a frequent connection by JR rapid train, named Rapid Airport. The conference site and your hotel are very close to the JR Sapporo station. For details, see the web page of Sapporo: ml Accommodation The lodging of participants will be arranged by Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd. For details, visit " Registra- tion & Accommodation" section in the conference web page. The deadline for booking a hotel room is 1 May 2010.
