In my hands By: Jennifer Armstrong Irene Gut Opdyke was so famous and loved that Jennifer Armstrong had made a biography about the courageous and amazing Irene Gut Opdyke. This book is tells you about her childhood and her life and mostly about her perseverance and experience throughout the Holocaust. It is a great book to read if you want to find out about Irene Gut Opdyke

Childhood Irene Gut Opdyke was born in a small village in Eastern Poland. She lived with her four sisters and her parents. She was raised in a nice, catholic home and was taught the ten commandments. Her father was an architect and also a chemist. In the year of 1939, Irene Gut Opdyke had enrolled in nursing school.

Rescuer of victims in the holocaust Being someone who would hide people in them holocaust was a very discreet and hard thing to do. The first thing she did to help out the victims in the holocaust was giving them food. She worked in a hotel and later, she would sneak some of the food to the local ghetto. Irene had also smuggled Jews into the woods and took food to them also. She was asked to work as a house keeper in a village and she had hid 12 Jews in a cellar and everyday they would get out and help her clean.

She had witnessed very sad things that would happen, like a child being ripped away from their mother and severe poverty and sadness. Being raised in a very good, catholic home, trained to be a good wife and mother, she could barely stand to see little children being murdered. She had said “ I felt like a wicked women in a children’s story leaving them abandoned in the forest for the wolves.” Some of the people she had saved immigrated to America. Irene Gut Opdyke is a lot like Oskar Schindler. They both are very famous people who had helped rescue the victims from the holocaust.

Oskar Schindler Born on April 28 th, Died on October 9 th, Oskar Schrindler is another person who persevered a lot and was a rescuer of Jews in the holocaust. As an opportunistic businessman, Schindler was one of the people who sought to profit from the German invasion of Poland in 1939.

Famous quotes from the holocaust "When I came to power, I did not want the concentration camps to become old age pensioners homes, but instruments of terror." - Adolf Hitler "The Holocaust is a central event in many people's lives, but it also has become a metaphor for our century. There cannot be an end to speaking and writing about it. Besides, in Israel, everyone carries a biography deep inside him." - Aharon Appelfeld "No one yet knows what awaits the Jews in the twenty-first century, but we must make every effort to ensure that it is better than what befell them in the twentieth, the century of the Holocaust." - Benjamin Netanyahu

This is the most astonishing quote from the Holocaust: "In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart" - Anne Frank
