Why Sustainability? Executive Orders and Laws Your Agency Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) GSA’s Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) Good Business Sense 4

“Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance” Expands sustainability goals of previous laws and Executive Orders EO Oct,

E.O Accountability and Transparency Strategic Sustainability Performance Planning Greenhouse Gas Management Sustainable Buildings and Communities Water Efficiency Electronic Products and Services Fleet and Transportation Management Pollution Prevention and Waste Reduction 6

E.O OMB must prepare scorecards providing periodic evaluation of Federal agency performance. The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ Chair) must ensure that Federal agencies are held accountable for conforming to Executive Requirements. 7

EO Managing existing building systems to reduce the consumption of energy, water, and materials and resources Buildings and leases (above 5,000 gross square feet) meet the Guiding Principles by fiscal year 2015 and that the agency makes annual progress towards 100% compliance across its building inventory. 8

Common Sources of Federal Greenhouse Emissions 9 9

EO Meeting Guiding Principles Employ Integrated Assessment, Operating, and Management Principles Optimize Energy Performance Protect and Conserve Water Enhance Indoor Environmental Quality Reduce Environmental Impact of Materials 10

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings and meets Guiding Principles. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. 11

LEED LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: Sustainable Site Development Water Savings Energy Efficiency Materials & Resources Indoor Environmental Quality 12

SSPP GSA will… Eliminate its impact on natural environment Use its government-wide influence to reduce the environmental impact of Federal Government Minimize and offset its consumption of energy, water, and other resources Eliminate all waste and pollution in all GSA operations and activities 13

14 Waste Reduction Divert at least 50% of non-hazardous solid waste by the end of fiscal year Minimize waste and pollutants through source reduction.

15

Recycling Resource Source 16

Construction Waste Mangement All construction projects must contain language to recycle and report on construction waste. Divert a minimum of 50% of demolition waste from the landfill. All carpet removed from a project must be reused or recycled. No carpet can be incinerated or land-filled. 17

Every one in this room can reduce waste, energy and water 18

Green Procurement Meet/exceed EPA’s recycled content recommendations for Comprehensive Procurement Guideline items (CPG). Non – CPG items: Project materials/products should contain the maximum amount of post-consumer recycled content if available; then the maximum amount of post-industrial recycled content. 19

Biobased Content Products For USDA-designated bio content products. Or, use products made from rapidly renewable resources and/or certified sustainable wood products. For the USDA Biobased product catalog: ferredCatalog/faces/jsp/catalogLanding.jsp ferredCatalog/faces/jsp/catalogLanding.jsp 20

21 Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) Organic Gases VOC’s are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOC’s include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long term adverse health effects.
