A Warning You will be provoked…..promise! You may be taken out of your comfort zone. You will be treated with respect!! Today will set a tone about how learning about the NADSP Code of Ethics and Competencies should happen.

The NADSP Code of Ethics Person Centered Supports Promoting Physical and Emotional Well-Being Confidentiality Self-Determination Integrity& Responsibility Justice, Fairness& Equity Respect Relationships Advocacy

The Toilet Paper Caper

Ethics…….defined; “A discipline dealing with good and evil and with moral duty” (Webster’s Dictionary) “Doing the right thing when nobody is looking”. (paraphrase from Henry Ford.)

WHY must we consider Ethics in the role of Direct Support Professionals?? Every day Direct Support Professionals help make decisions with the people they support. Decisions based on what one thinks is ok, good or right will lead to a slippery slope into possible unethical practice.

The Official NADSP Code of Ethics Encounter Person Centered Supports Promoting Physical and Emotional Well-Being Confidentiality Self-Determination Integrity& Responsibility Justice, Fairness& Equity Respect Relationships Advocacy

An appetizer….. The following “Encounter” is meant to be a brief but powerful introduction to the NADSP Code of Ethics. The Code will NOT give you answers to situations in your practice. It is strictly and only a guideline and road map for decision making. The Code is not only for direct support professionals BUT is to be embraced and understood by all levels of an organization. National Alliance for Direct Supprofessionals (NADSP)

Under no circumstances is the following activity and role play meant to mock, degrade or hurt people giving or receiving support. This is a time-tested and very powerful but unorthodox way in which to learn about ethics. We believe it is impossible to learn the code of ethics any other way. You will be asked to leave the room if I feel you are being disrespectful.

48 years of age Lives with 4 other man on Main Street (right here in Grand Island, Nebraska!) Loves music and loves people Is his own guardian Is sexually active and consenting Is limited to 12 ounces of coffee Really, really loves coffee Has been diagnosed with an Intellectual Disability / N.O.S.

Your important role today.... When the magic wand is waved over the group....ALL of you will become John’s Direct Support Professionals. We will periodically interrupt the role play for purposes of debriefing and processing. Maintain your role as a Direct Support Professional when we are in the encounter. Please suspend judgment and be respectful....USE THE CODE OF ETHICS displayed on the screen TO GUIDE YOUR DECISIONS WITH John.

INTENTION All professionals do their craft with intention. It is what makes a professional different than an amateur.

IMPORTANT!!!!! The Code Ethics is rooted in equity and support. NOT...power, control or professional“expertise”

National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

The Code of Ethics Encounter Version 2.0 Purpose of the advanced encounter Benefit to look deep into our ethical situations close to home Deconstruct and troubleshoot situations given the frame and guidance of the Code of Ethics Challenge our situations with a new and deeper understanding of ethics in our support practice Discover how equity truly works more effectively than control in our human relationships National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Small Group Exercise 1 In your group share some stories from your life that are associated with “ethical” dilemmas Using the tenets of the Code of Ethics discuss ways that the particular situation in your story may have been better addressed Elect one story to share with the entire reconvened group and together we will look at that story in light of the Code and discover new insights PLEASE ensure confidentiality in your sharing….no names and please change any identifying details that may disclose anyone you support National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Small Group Exercise 2 Choose ONE of the tenets of the Code of Ethics Create a role play in your group that addresses that particular tenet. Get creative and have some fun but devise your own “encounter” to share with your colleagues when we reconvene. The power of role play in bringing the Code to a real life and practical application is profound Please remember that role plays MUST be respectful in their language and the “acting” that takes place National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Code of Ethics Focus Group Three questions to crystallize today’s event Please answer the questions on the screen Suspend judgment and listen with open hearts and open minds Most of all use this interaction to promote and determine how your organization can integrate and embody the Code of Ethics into the tapestry of all you do National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Question 1 Describe any new or different perspectives you have discovered related to the Code of Ethics and your involvement with the people you support or the people who support you based on today’s event National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Question 2 If you could change an agency policy or a state regulation in order to be more aligned and in step with the Code of Ethics what might that be? National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)

Final Question What will YOU do personally to include the Code of Ethics into YOUR everyday and daily life at Onondaga Community Living? Be specific!!!! National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)
