What is the role of an SNG – Student Mentor?

Management 100 History M100 History The Problem - Strong academic foundation, but lacked real experiences and emphasis on professionalism. We needed a process designed to help new students grow professionally regardless of their starting point. We needed a avenue to engage student in the large lecture classroom of Nelson 3400.

Management 100 – Professionalism, Diversity, and Academic Success Professionalism o Business communications and etiquette o Navigating unwritten rules o Networking o Professional Portfolio Diversity o First impressions o Diversity in the workplace o Support systems Academic Success o Degree planning o Time Management o GPA Calculating o Academic Consequences Diversity Academic Success Professionalism How do you make all of this happen?

Poole students created the SNG model based on “Corporate affinity groups” Affinity groups, also called networking groups, provide forums for employees to gather socially and share ideas outside of their particular business units. Affinity groups bring together employees based on country of origin, racial, ethnic-background and gender-based affinity groups religion, physical disabilities, military service, age, sexual orientation and many other parameters.

What is the purpose of SNG? To foster a sense of community, belonging, and connection within the larger university To build an awareness of diversity and inclusivity among students, To foster intergroup dialogue, Provide access to professional and student role models, and to give students opportunities to develop networking skills.

Student Network Groups African-American Asian/Pacific Islander Commuter Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) Hispanic/Latino/Latina International Student o Students who have lived outside of the US or students who are interested in meeting those students International Experience o Students who have an interest in living and working in other countries Men Military o Students who are members or have family that are in the military Multicultural Non-Traditional o Students 25 years or older or students who are parents Out of State Religion & Spirituality o Students interested in interfaith dialogue Rural Women

Other duties as assigned… Communicate with your professional mentor. Provide students with your contact information during and after class. o Use template. o Try to connect with students with LinkedIn, Facebook, GroupMe groups.. Contact students 3 times a month. Review student assignments – reply to really great reflections or really bad reflections. Attend SNG Events with your students. o Know the SNG calendar. o Create your own SNG event – go.ncsu.edu/CreateSNGevent Attend SNG General Body Meetings 2/23, 3/30, 4/20 at 5:30pm in Nelson 2405 Complete contact logs by 5:30pm before each SNG General Meeting
