Qualifications for Skills for Life tutors

Level 5 Diplomas: Adult Literacy; Adult Numeracy and Adult ESOL GPRLS – General Professional Recognition Learning and Skills Level 4/5 Embedded Approaches to Literacy, Language and Numeracy Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy

Level 5 Literacy,Numeracy and ESOL Diplomas Tutors of the above subjects are required to achieve qualifications at Level 5. Tutors have to demonstrate their own literacy or numeracy skills at Level 3 to be able to progress on to the diplomas. Organisations are beginning to offer ‘bridging’ courses if necessary. Level 5 courses give tutors the chance to increase their own subject knowledge and, as importantly, improve their practice in the classroom.

General Professional Recognition Learning and Skills (GPRLS) What will GPRLS give? Professional recognition to those with extensive experience, expertise and credentials Who is it for? Existing members of the workforce (pre September 2007) Experienced teachers who are new to learning and skills sector Those part qualified for their role when 2007 regulations were introduced

GPRLS continued There are now three routes to General Professional Recognition: GPRLS - Skills for Life GPRLS - All Areas of Learning GPRLS - B4

Levels 4 and 5 Embedded Approaches for Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) for teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector Research shows that the effective embedding of LLN into vocational subjects leads to higher levels of success for learners Modules have been developed for teachers of ‘other’ specialist areas other than LLN This qualification does not address personal English or maths skills – it concentrates on supporting learners

Levels 2 in Literacy and Numeracy It is necessary to recognise that there a number of tutors who do not have their own literacy and numeracy skills recognised at Level 2. Staff will fall into 2 categories: those who have the skills but have no formal qualification and those who will need to improve their own skills to achieve Level 2. There are various ways this could be achieved: within your own organisation as staff development; at local colleges or through learndirect. Tutors can use the ‘Move on’ website to assess and improve their own literacy and numeracy skills This can be a sensitive issue; you will need to carefully consider how you could address the issue.

Levels 2 in Literacy and Numeracy We are going to look at some activities that will help your staff begin to self-assess their maths skills.
