W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 1 Tracking Microwave Rovers with APRS By Bob Kmak K5WO

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 2 Keeping Track of Where Everyone Is Recent NTMS events have been characterized by more rovers than home stations. Keeping track of where all the rovers are, especially when they are en route to a new location, has become increasingly difficult.

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 3 Why APRS? APRS is an automated method of broadcasting position, direction, and velocity data from an amateur radio station. APRS-enabled rovers would continually broadcast their position via packet radio on MHz. Home stations monitoring APRS data either through the internet or using only radio could see the position of most or all rovers at any given time.

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 4 APRS Review In the US, APRS stations beacon on MHz The three basic components of an APRS beaconing station are a GPS receiver, 2 meter FM radio, and a Terminal Node Controller (TNC) GPS Radio NMEA Data TNC PTT XMT RCV Beaconing (rover) station

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 5 An APRS monitoring station requires a computer and appropriate software for viewing the position of other APRS stations. ComputerTNC RS-232 Radio PTT XMT RCV ComputerInternet Monitoring (home) station

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 6

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 7 How APRS packets are propagated Direct propagation from one station to another Digipeaters - A number of stations in the area are configured to repeat, or retransmit, every packet they hear. The number of times a packet is digipeated is controlled by routing instructions embedded in the packet. Internet Gateways - Some APRS stations are connected to the internet, and send all packets they receive to databases on the internet.

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 8 The Tiny Tracker A tiny, transmit only TNC. Connects to transceiver and GPS receiver. Can be configured to beacon only when moving, every X seconds, only when speed is above Y, etc. $36.00 in kit form.

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 9 Tiny Tracker configuration

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 10 Configuring ‘Smart Beaconing’ SmartBeaconing Slow Speed, Slow Rate This setting sets the SmartBeaconing slow speed (MPH) and rate (seconds). Speeds slower than the slow speed will cause TinyTrak3 to beacon at the Slow Rate. SmartBeaconing Fast Speed, Fast Rate This setting sets the SmartBeaconing fast speed (MPH) and rate (seconds). Speeds faster than the fast speed will cause TinyTrak3 to beacon at the Fast Rate. Fast Speed must be set higher than Slow Speed. SmartBeaconing Min Turn Angle, Turn Slope, and Min Turn Time These settings set CornerPegging parameters for the minimum turn angle (degrees), turn slope (MPH-degrees), and minimum turn time (seconds). Turns less than the minimum turn angle since the last transmission will not cause a transmission. The lower the turn slope, the quicker TinyTrak3 will transmit due to turning. Both Min Turn Time and Min Turn Angle must be less than 256.

W5HN North Texas Microwave Society NTMS 11 Monitoring APRS via the Internet A web browser and internet connection are all that is necessary to monitor APRS data via the internet. The most commonly used APRS website is
