Which mouth would you like to be?

Being a Student Observer You have a unique point of view on how you are taught, and we want to hear it! Do you want the chance to comment on how you are taught? A Student Observer will have time out of their lessons to see teachers teach other lessons. A Student Observer will comment on how the lesson is taught, what was good about it and possibly how it can be improved. Your opinion counts and we want to hear it!

‘How do I become a Student Observer?’ Application forms will be available from your tutor! The Application Form asks for detailed information about you and your experience. The purpose of the form is to give you the opportunity to tell us about all the things you have done which may help you to be an effective ‘Student Observer’. There will be no interview, so your application will need to be filled out well. It’s your chance to show off all the fantastic things you do, and let us know why you’d be a good Student Observer. All sections of the application will need to be filled out.

‘Does my opinion count?’ Yes! We are keen to gain the insights of a range of pupils with a wide variety of interests and strengths. You should seek to emphasise your strong areas and give consideration to how being a student observer would help you to develop. The following few slides illustrate how to go about filling in your application.

‘Okay so how do I fill the application form out?’ All sections of the application must be filled out. (You might wish to work in pencil to avoid making mistakes) PERSONAL DETAILS The information given here will be used to contact you and to identify you accurately when contacting referees. The information will not be used in the selection process. CURRENT POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY Please give us the details of any positions of responsibility that you hold. Include things such as being a form representative, a library helper, helping with a club etc. If you are currently not in any position of responsibility, then say so here. PREVIOUS POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY Please list previous positions in chronological order. Things to mention could include helping with secondary transfer or other open evenings, being a captain of a sports team, being responsible for or helping with a fund raising activity, being a form representative etc.

‘Okay so how do I fill the application form out?’ All sections of the application must be filled out. (You might wish to work in pencil to avoid making mistakes) WHY YOU WISH TO BE A STUDENT OBSERVER Here you should concentrate on why you think getting a student’s view of lessons would be a valuable thing for the school. Tell us what attracts you about being part of this new initiative. CONTRIBUTION TO WIDER SCHOOL LIFE This is your opportunity to describe any interests or experiences that could be relevant to the post for which you are applying. You could include any examples of you working collaboratively with others, being in teams, contributing to meetings etc. SCHOOL SPONSOR You will need to be sure that your school sponsor is willing and able to sign your form showing that they support your application. This could be your form tutor, HOY or another adult employed by the school. Note that sponsors cannot be friends or relatives.

‘Okay so how do I fill the application form out?’ All sections of the application must be filled out. (You might wish to work in pencil to avoid making mistakes) PARENTAL CONSENT It is very important that you gain your parent/guardian’s consent to apply for the position of Student Observer. You will be asked to observe up to 3 times in any academic year and this may mean that you could miss some lesson time. Your parents need to understand and accept this. It is also important that they understand the confidential nature of the post. If successful in your application you will undergo a training course lasting at least one day. This should also be taken into account and agreed to.
