Written by Katherine Paterson A Third Grade Literature Project Presented by: Damian October 16, 2014 Bridge to Terabithia

This book is a realistic fiction book about friendship. The main characters are Leslie Burke and Jesse Aarons. The story mainly takes place in the town of Lark Creek. The setting is in Leslie’s and Jess’ homes, in their school, and in Terabithia (a “magical” place in the forest).

First, Jess looked forward to becoming the fastest fifth grader at Lark Creek School, but the new girl, Leslie, won the race instead. This win allowed Leslie to run in a bigger race, but she was not allowed to because she was a girl. Jess stuck up for her and encouraged the angry leaders to let her run in the heat race. This led to a new found friendship.

At school, Leslie and Jess had to write about a favorite hobby in class. Leslie told the class that she liked to scuba dive. Then, the teacher assigned the kids to watch a show on scuba diving, but Leslie admitted she did not have a t.v. This made the class laugh at her and dislike her. Jess wanted to help by letting her use his television. From that point on, they were best friends.

To escape from bullies and be free to do whatever they wanted, they decided to create Terabithia. This place was a magical kingdom. To reach this kingdom, they swung across a creek by a rope. As the rulers of Terabithia, they told secrets and made wishes.

Even though she was warned by her big brother, Jess, not to brag about the Twinkies in her lunch, May Belle could not help herself one day on the bus. As a result, she had her twinkies stolen by Janice Avery (a school bully).

My favorite part is when Jess and Leslie defeat Janice Avery and help her realize it is not right to bully others. They wrote a love note to Janice and signed it from Willard Hughes. Next, they put it in Janice’s desk. After that, Janice felt embarrassed when the rumor about the love note spread. Leslie talked it out with Janice, and Janice stopped bullying them.

I loved this book because it has a lot of interesting and exciting chapters. I think it was very cool that they had a secret hideaway where they could get away from their problems. I recommend this book, and I hope you love it too!
