Angel Island-San Francisco Asians, primarily Chinese, West Coast

Ellis Island was built in 1892 as the 1st “Immigration Center”. Later, closed in the 1940s and today it is a museum. The goal was to “screen” immigrants coming from Europe. Immigrants took physical examinations and were held at Ellis Island before they were released to the US mainland.

CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT Resentment and discrimination against the Chinese. First law to restrict immigration. Taking away jobs from Nativists Banned all entry of the Chinese except students, teachers, doctors Chinese Exclusion Act 1

CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT President Hayes vetoed this act and Congress would override it. He would not be re-elected. Chinese immigration would be outlawed until the 1920’s. Chinese Exclusion Act 2

The Melting Pot - “Melting Pot”-assimilation describes America as a mixture of culture and people who blended together-soup! Cultural Pluralism- you integrate without losing culture and beliefs-salad bowl! Side effect = NATIVISM (introduced by Know-Nothing Party) Nativism - anti-immigrant feeling Religion– differences in religion caused “nativism” to be an issue more than anything else! U.S BEGINS TO THINK ABOUT RESTRICTIONS!!!!

Immigration Restriction *Prescott Hall (1894) – founded the Immigration Restriction League who points out the “Right” and “Wrong” countries Right – Britain, Germany, Scandinavian, (progressive/energetic –can help American economy) Wrong – Any Latin country (stagnant –cannot help American economy) REMEMBER-Social Darwinism- applies to people as well as businesses-individuals should succeed through their own efforts!

Key Legislation Know Nothing Party -The party’s members worked during the late 1850s to limit the voting strength of immigrants, keep Catholics out of public office, and require lengthy residence before citizenship Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882-Under pressure from , which had already barred Chinese from owning property or working at certain jobs, Congress passed this law sharply limiting Chinese immigration. “Gentlemen’s Agreement”- In 1907 President Roosevelt reached an informal agreement with under which that nation-Japan- halted emigration of its people to the US . Literacy Tests-In 1917 Congress enacted a law barring any immigrant who could not read or write Emergency Quota Act of 1921-This law sharply limited the number of immigrants to the each year to about 350,000. National Origins Quota Act of 1924-This law further reduced immigration and biased it in favor of those immigrants from northern and western . National Origins Act of 1929-This act further limited immigration to 150,000 people a year.

Job opportunities for Women School teaching Domestic service Women doctors Lawyers, typists, telephone girls, librarians, journalists and social workers. Women gainfully employed rose from 2.5 million in 1880 to 8 million in 1910

Take the Good with the Bad Slums Criminals Beggars Pollution bad smells grafters (corrupt politicians) Cities offered beautiful parks, museums, libraries, churches, hospitals and schools. Became the intellectual nerve center of the country.

URBAN Solutions The Settlement House Movement • Social welfare reformers work to relieve urban poverty • Social Gospel movement—preaches salvation through service to poor • Settlement houses—community centers in slums, help immigrants • Run by college-educated women, they: - provide educational, cultural, social services - send visiting nurses to the sick - help with personal, job, financial problems • Jane Addams founds Hull House with Ellen Gates Starr in 1889

Social Welfare Reformer Settlement Houses led mostly by **JANE ADAMS** (HULL HOUSE) (most famous) Settlement Houses - community centers that assisted “poor immigrants” / provided educational, cultural, and social expectancies to fit into American society. TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS The wealthy lived extravagant lifestyles and considered themselves elitists. The common people resented their snobbish attitudes and wealth. There was a caste system in the U.S. 1861---------3 millionaires----------1900--------3,800 1900, 90% of wealth, controlled by 10% of population.

POLITICAL MACHINES The Role of the Political Boss Most served as mayor controls city jobs, business licenses influenced courts, municipal agencies arranged building projects community services Bosses paid by businesses, get voters’ loyalty, extend influence Machines use electoral fraud to win elections Graft—illegal use of political influence for personal gain Machines take kickbacks, bribes to allow illegal activities

Immigrants and the Political Machine Why would immigrants SUPPORT Political Machines? Political machines and bosses provide “ANSWERS” to immigrants questions and concerns! Helped with the “naturalization” process (attaining full citizenship) Helps with finding JOBS Each new immigrant represented another voter. This attracted the attention of political machines, like Boss Tweed -head of New York City’s Tammany Hall.

WILLIAM BOSS TWEED Exposed for his corruption by cartoonist and editor, Thomas Nast Tweed Ring fell and 1873 Tweed convicted of embezzlement Later Tweed was arrested on a civil charge and jailed in NYC, later died there

To Sum it all up… “The Gilded Age” Phrase penned by Mark Twain as satire for the way America had become. It revealed the “best and worst” of America. The Gilded Age suggests that there was a glittering layer of prosperity that covered the poverty and corruption that existed in much of society. Theme: The Coming of America But… It needed reform… …Enter The Progressive Era
