Smoking and the use of tobacco products is a serious problem in society and the church today Hundreds of thousands of people use tobacco everyday

 Is it a sin to smoke or use tobacco products?  Should a mature, faithful child of God be included among the number of those who smoke? Can we SEE the difference?

 Things to consider as we begin our study  Bible does not mention the practice of smoking Practice unknown in Biblical times Introduced among Asian and European people in the 1500’s Bible teaches principles but certain practices are not mentioned (dancing, pope, etc.)  Christians must deny self and seek God Matthew 16:24-27; Romans 12:1-2  Christians must desire to be like Jesus 1 Peter 2:21; 1 Corinthians 11:1

 430,000 Americans die each year  From diseases related to smoking and tobacco  27% of Americans smoke  80% start before age 21  One in 5 high school seniors smoke daily  70% have tried cigarettes  3,000 teenagers start smoking each day  3.4% of Americans use snuff or chewing tobacco 100% of all humans start life as non-smokers!

Every time a cigarette is smoked, it is like putting a clamp on the blood vessels. It has been shown that smoking even one cigarette will constrict the arteries, veins, and capillaries, and to that extent will slow down the blood circulation in all parts of the body, including the brain. - Alton Oshsner, MD International Society of Surgery

“Cigarette smoking is now as an important cause of death as the great past epidemics of typhoid, cholera and tuberculosis.” - British Royal College of Physicians

“The good news is that we know the cause of at least 80% of the cases of this leading cancer killer -- cigarettes.” -Harvard Medical School Health Letter (Vol. III, No. 6, April 1978)

“Cigarette smoking is a major cause of emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, heart disease….Just one cigarette speeds up your heart beat, increases your blood pressure, upsets the flow of blood and air in your lungs, causes a drop in the skin temperature of your fingers and toes.” - American Lung Association

“Nicotine raises the smoker’s blood pressure and speeds up his pulse.” - Dr. Authur H. Cain “Smoking one pack or more a day will shorten one’s life on the average by 12 years.” - Curtis Torno, MD (Christian)

“Smoking is the predominant cause of bronchitis and emphysema.” T. Mark Lloyd, MD (Christian) “Both Nicotine and carbon monoxide contribute significant increase in heart attacks and in sudden death from coronary heart disease in cigarette smokers.” Dr. Wilbert S. Aronow

Survey of 10,000 physicians: Question: “Do you consider cigarette smoking as hazardous to your health?” 98% - Yes! 2% - Weren’t sure 0% - No!

Warning Labels on Package: “The Surgeon General has determined that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health.” - May cause birth defects. Health & Life Insurance Rates: Higher for smokers

 Nicotine dependence  Nicotine meets the criteria of an addictive drug  A Sin to deliberately harm the body  1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Our body is not ours We have no right to abuse our body Wrong to destroy the temple of God  Present our bodies as a living sacrifice  Romans 12:1-2

 Very difficult to quit  2 Peter 2:19  Addiction is a sin  Not to be enslaved  1 Corinthians 6:12  Violates self-control  2 Peter 1:5-10  Addiction is NOT a habit  Habits can be good  Addiction = dependence

 Affects others around the smoker  Smoke off the burning end is just as dangerous  Harms the family  Affects breathing, voice  Smell lingers in hair, clothes, car, etc.  Treat others respectfully  Matt 7:12; Phil 2:4

 We are to set a good example before all  1 Tim 4:12; Phil 2:15; Matt 5:13-16  God’s instruction concerning the flesh “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” (Rom 13:14)

 Would smoking help or hinder your service to God?  Does smoking show proper appreciation for the blessing of life and good health?  Does smoking harmonize or conflict with a Christian’s worship and prayer?  Can you honestly pray for good health while continuing to smoke?  Can you thank God for the privilege of smoking?  Would smoking show that you are being a faithful steward of your body?

 Would you be pleased to have other people, including your children imitate your example of smoking?  Are you willing to recommend that other people begin the addiction of smoking?  1 Corinthians 11:1  Would smoking help or hinder your efforts to teach others about Christ?  Would you be willing to accept elders or preachers who smoke?  Should they smoke or not? (Rom 2:1-3, 21-24)

 Can you smoke in all good conscience, or do you have doubts about it?  Romans 14:23  Would Jesus smoke?  Would you smoke in Jesus’ presence?  Would you offer Jesus a cigarette?  If so, would you expect Him to accept it?  1 Peter 2:21-22; Matthew 10:25; 1 Corinthians 11:1 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. (James 4:17)

 Biblical principles of God’s Word shows that for one to be in the proper fellowship with God – then one can not smoke or use tobacco  One must first admit it is a sin – then quit the sin
