Rapport/Investigation lecture

Using ACE fitness website: Search: examination prep 66 Click: how to use TTM article (3rd one down) Fill in the 5 stages of the TTM

Write your clients ‘stats” Age Family history Smoker Sedentary lifestyle Weight BP Cholesterol: HDL/LDL glucose: Is this: rapport, investigation, planning or action???

Ask your client to fill out the readiness to change questionnaire After they fill it out: Identify what stage of the TTM they could be in Is this: rapport/investigation/planning/action?

Motivational Interviewing Can be used by personal trainer to facilitate behavioral change Helps client feel like they are in control Helps determine the client’s level of readiness or current stage of change Use a readiness to change questionnaire

Health Risk Appraisal In general moderate levels of exercise and physical activity to not provoke cardiovascular or musculoskeletal, but if client is unhealthy or have pre-existing disease they are at risk Purpose pf pre-participation screening Identify presence or absence of CV, pulmonary or metabolic disease Medical contraindication Detect at risk individuals who should first undergo medical exam Questionnaires should be client led with little input from personal trainer PAR-Q is a good example as a minimal, yet safe pre-exercise screening measure

PAR-Q Have your client fill out the sample PAR-Q example

Risk Stratification Someone with only one positive risk factor will be treated differently than someone with several risks Categorized as low, moderate or high Identify CAD risk factors Perform risk stratification based on CAD risk factors Determine need for medical exam clearance

1. Using the statistics from your client use table 6-1 to tally their risk # 2. Using figure 6-4 Risk stratification determine if they are low, moderate or high risk 3. Circle that risk, Explain to your client what they need to do

Evaluation forms: Informed consent: “assumption of risk” Client acknowledges the risks associated with activity Limitations: not a liability waiver, doesn’t provide legal immunity Used to communicate dangers of the exercise program or test procedures, verbally review it with client Liability waiver: used to release personal trainer from liability for injuries, client voluntarily abandon right to file suit Does not protect against negligence Health history questionnaire: more detailed than PAR-Q and CAD screen

Evaluation forms Exercise history and attitude questionnaire: background of client’s exercise history Important when developing goals, program design, attitude about exercise Medical Release: medical information and explains limitations and guidelines as outline by MD Testing forms: used to record testing and measurement data

Cardiovascular Respiratory Musculoskeletal Metabolic Other conditions Athersclerosis (CAD)   MI Possibly no S/S Hypertension Asthma Bronchitis COPD: Forms will help identify old and new injury Sprains Strains Overuse “Shin splints” ITBS Herniated discs Bursitis Tendinitis arthritis Diabetes Hyperthyroid hypothyroid Hernia: Valsalva maneuver Pregnancy

Medications: Fill in your chart using page 161
