Preview of Approach 1.What is motivation? 2.How do you motivate anyone? 3.What motivates you? 4.How do you motivate volunteers? 5.Real challenges and approaches. 6.Special Challenges 7.Understanding limits

1. What is motivation? What makes people strive for change? Reality about motives

2. How do you motivate anyone? Can a leader find the “hot buttons”? Can you “motivate,” but not manipulate?

3. What motivates you? Pride Enjoyment A sense of duty or obligation Recognition – applause and awards Acceptance Tangible reward Positive “K.I.T.A.”

4. How do you motivate volunteers? What is a “volunteer”? Recognize differences in members If not pay or duty, which rewards work?

4. How do you motivate volunteers? Differences between “command” and supervision and leading volunteers?

5. Real Challenges with Volunteers Volunteers can “walk” 3 ways How can you keep them?

Six Special Challenges 1.He’s willing, but is he able? 2.He’s able, but will he be available? 3.“We have always done it this way.” 4.“You can’t do that in this Lodge.” 5.“I didn’t ask for this, you asked me!” 6.“I changed my mind.”

Challenge No. 1: Willing Incompetents “He’s willing, but is he able?

Challenge No. 2: Overcommitted Members He’s able, but will he be avail-able? Watch out for the man who can’t say “no.” Sometimes it’s better to go with a novice. As a leader you must choose

Challenge No. 3: Status quo guardian “We have always done it this way.” Listen to the “old timers” Don’t be intimidated; it’s your decision Don’t be manipulated to name someone to a committee just because he always did the task before.

Challenge No. 4: The Traditionalists “You can’t do that in this Lodge.”

Challenge No.5: Conscripted “Volunteers” “I didn’t ask for this, you asked me!”
