Class Introduction BA 543 Financial Markets and Institutions

Assignments Weekly Readings Two or Three Chapters per Week Foundations in Financial Markets and Institutions Individual Class Presentation Sign Up for Topic Individual presentation of 15 minutes with 5 minutes for Questions and Answers Four presentations per week Topics extend textbook Examples in week two on Health Insurance Exchanges, Social Security Fixes, and Retirement Planning

Assignments Continued Paper on Presentation Topic Paper due May 28, 2013 (week nine) Length 6 to 8 pages References required Can be an extension of presentation Final Exam Tuesday Evening June 11, 2013 Multiple Choice Exam “Five Questions” from each week of class

Expectations Reading Assignments Chapters read prior to class (around 60 – 70 pages) Lectures will cover some of the material from each chapter but you are responsible for all topics in reading assignments Ask questions in class on material and participate in lecture discussion Presentation Start by reading chapter in text that fits your topic See me prior to presentation on scope and depth of presentation Presentation provided to class

Expectations Paper Matches presentation topic More flexibility with paper (scope and depth) Not shared with class Six to Eight pages (use appropriate length to present topic) References (format provided) Final Exam From textbook and student presentations 50 multiple choice questions worth 50% of grade

Expectations Need to be on time for every class You are the audience for each presenter Need to participate in student presentations and lecture Active learning – Professional Courtesies When you present You are the teacher and responsible for the material You must engage the class Do not rely on single “prop” for conveying material Have additional support material for answering questions
