Alma Elizaldi Maria Lara OCEAN ENERGY

 It’s energy carried by ocean waves, tides, salinity, and ocean temperature differences.  This energy can be used to generate electricity to power homes, transport and industries.  The ocean can produce 2 types of energy 1.Thermal energy- energy from the sun’s heat 2.Mechanical energy- from the tides and waves WHAT IS OCEAN ENERGY?

 is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replaced on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?

Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun.  heating and lighting homes  generating electricity  hot water heating  sunlight causes plants to grow WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Ocean mechanical energy is quite different from ocean thermal energy. Even though the sun affects all ocean activity, tides are driven primarily by the gravitational pull of the moon, and waves are driven primarily by the winds. As a result, tides and waves are intermittent sources of energy, while ocean thermal energy is fairly constant. Also, unlike thermal energy, the electricity conversion of both tidal and wave energy usually involves mechanical devices. HOW IS THE OCEAN ENERGY OBTAINED?

In order to obtain this kind of energy waves are needed. They begin forming thousands of miles from coastlines and days in advance; tides rise and fall as dependably as the cycles of the moon. That predictability makes it easier to match supply with demand. WHAT CONDITIONS NEED TO BE PRESENT TO OBTAIN OCEAN ENERGY?

Advantages Tidal energy is an alternative energy. The energy produced is clean and non polluting. There is no carbon dioxide or any other by-products released. It produces no greenhouse gases or other waste. It is a renewable energy that will help reduce our reliance on the burning of fossil fuels. Disadvantages Wave Energy Converters, WECs, are installed in the sea and in many cases offshore and thus they are exposed to strong ocean waves, storms and certainly sea water. These are factors which may lead to their frequent breakdown which results to loss of service, production of electricity, loss of income and an increase of operational costs. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF OCEAN ENERGY

It has not become commercially used due to the high cost of the equipment necessary to build a system. Primary approaches to bringing the cold seawater to the surface include active pumping and desalination. Desalinating the water near the sea floor lowers its density and causes it to rise to the surface. COSTLY OR NOT?

China is the latest country to take on the decades-old challenge of generating electricity from the world’s oceans. Beijing has invested an estimated $160 million in tidal and wave energy projects since OCEAN ENERGY IS SUCCESSFUL IN..
