Methods for KNOWLEDGE extraction Asst. Prof. Lubomira Parijkova, PhD

 Career development and growth of every young man and a specialist is not only linked to the development of professional skills and competencies, but also the so-called "soft skills" related to communication. It is very important to work towards better communication and presentation skills, even if they are not part of the job description of the specialist. These skills enable us to cope better in each sphere, namely library, science, production, society and their border areas.

Text methods  include extraction of knowledge, information from documents (methods, regulations, service manuals), statistics and specialized literature (articles, monographs, textbooks). This method is an archive tool that is widely used because each study before starting, must rely on all or at least the most important data accumulated to date of the study.

Game methods  used in sociology, economics, management, pedagogy, training of managers and politicians

Communication methods  Passive methods –The Expert has leading role in the procedure of extracting the knowledge. The Manager only records results.  Active methods –initiative is a Knowledge manager is active and interacts with the others - in interviews, surveys, games, dialogue, talk, etc.

Passive methods  observation  protocol analysis "think aloud“  lectures

The main Active methods  surveys  interviews  free dialogue  games

Survey Advantages Possibility of standardized consulting several specialists. Without pressure during the procedure of interviewing. Disadvantages It is necessary to have an experience for creating a survey. The questions may not understand correctly. There isn’t a feedback

Interview Advantages There is a feedback (We may clarify and specify the questions) Disadvantages It takes a lot of time for preparation of interview questions

Free dialogue Advantages  Flexibility. Strong feedback.  Ability to change the script and form Disadvantages  High stress for the interviewer Lack of formal methods for conducting the dialog  Difficulty to reporting the results
