Presentation transcript:

IXth European Interparliamentary Space Conference Eutelsat Astrid Bonté, Responsible for Institutional Relations. Rome, October 8th 2007

October 2007 Eutelsat in brief Leading European satellite player : 24 satellites, 830 M€ revenues

October 2007Page 3 Eutelsat applications and services at a glance > Video: > DTH:Broadcasting over 2,500 TV channels, more than 1,000 radio channels > Professional video > Data > Private VSAT networks > Trunking > Value-Added Services > Internet access > Mobile services * Eutelsat financial year ends June 30 Current Future > HDTV > Broadband Internet access in Ka band > Mobile TV in S band > Galileo applications

High Definition TV

October 2007 High Definition : the future of satellite TV > HDTV requires 4 to 5 times more bandwidth than Standard Definition TV: > 10 SD channels in MPEG 2, only 5 HD channels in MPEG4 and 2 to 3 in MPEG 2 on one transponder > Satellites are more appropriate than terrestrial technologies > Today: about 40 HD channels in Europe > Forseen in 2010: 150 HD channels in Europe

Internet broadband access in Ka band

October 2007 Ka Sat for Broadband Internet Access > An entire Ka band satellite > Fully dedicated to affordable and bi- directional broadband internet access > Ordered in summer 2007 > Launch planned in 2010 > Coverage: Western &Eastern Europe as well as spots around the Mediterranean > Small spots allowing re-use of frequencies

October 2007 Addressing the digital divide > Ka Sat will address areas of the digital divide, with no substitutive terrestrial technologies > Small antennas ( 67 cm) > Reduced costs: > Monthly service : from 200 € to 45 € > Terminal : from 1500 € to 300 € Households with no broadband access but owing a PC Europe de l’Ouest 6 million households Europe de l’Est 6 million households Afrique du Nord 8 million Households

October 2007 Broadband: Satellite becomes competitive Capex/ MHz/year HotBird series / 20 txp W series / 30 txp Atlantic Bird / 35 txp W series / 60 txp W series / 100 txp Ka-band Satellite 7 times cheaper than latest-generation Ku-band > Ka-band allows satellite to enter new markets in which Ku-band is not competitive 100% 80% 60% 40% 20%

Mobile TV in S band

October 2007 Mobile TV in S-band with W2A > Ordered in 2006, > Launch planned in Q1, 2009 > Shared investment between Eutelsat and SES Astra (creation of a Joint Venture) > One S-band payload > Power can be allocated among up to SIX spots beams according to customer requirements W2A S-band payload coverage If successful, additional S-band satellite capacity is expected to be launched over Europe in the coming years

October 2007 Targeted Service Live Radio 1 TV channel = 5-6 radio channels Data Services Programme guide, traffic information… Handheld Terminals (external antenna) Handheld Terminals (integrated antenna) Automobile Live TV 9-15 satellite channels terrestrial channels

October 2007 System Architecture Gateway GSM/3G base stations Content Center GSM / 3G Network S-Band 9-15 SATELLITE CHANNELS TERRESTRIAL CHANNELS

October 2007 Why? - > …Choose S-band? > L band: Entirely used by Inmarsat and Thuraya C/Ku/Ka band: Higher frequency bands reserved for satellite but not adequate for mobile applications > S band: unused and close to the UMTS frequencies (antennas of 3G transmitters can be re-used and little additional hardware required in the terminal) > … Choose satellite for mobile networks? > Cost advantage in case of wide geographical coverage Complete coverage within satellite footprint (signal cannot be received indoor without terrestrial repeaters though) Internationally coordinated frequencies: multi-national service roll- out possible

October 2007 Regulatory uncertainties on S band > The S-band frequencies will not be allocated (by the European Commission) before 2009 > This timing is incompatible with market requirements > Mobile TV networks are deployed now (2007 – 2008) > No customer can commit to a S-band network without knowing how much spectrum is available > The allocation process has to be accelerated significantly, or there will be no market for Mobile TV via satellite in Europe

Galileo applications

October 2007 Galileo applications > Value added will come from the combination of mobile communication and positionning capabilities > Emergency signaling from cars (where no GSM reception) > Automatic road toll systems > Updating of cartography data in car receptors via a S band mobile broadcast system. > With the S band payload on W2A, Eutelsat and SES are the only operators owing the perfect tools to lead those applications

Thank you for your attention
