Motion of the Ocean View:Ocean and Weather Phenomena Can you actually see changing tides? Does movement of Earth cause waves? How does the ocean impact the weather? How does the weather impact the ocean? How does the ocean impact climate? Reminder: Citizen Science Scientific Investigation must be placed in my Workspace folder

Motion of the Ocean - tides Focus: What causes tides? Are tides the same around the world? What factors shape the tides and their periodicity? Watch: The Endless Voyage: Ebb and FlowThe Endless Voyage: Ebb and Flow Notes: The Tides (from the video and the text) For the text you must cite specific page #’s using chapter 10 Focus: What causes tides? Watch: The Endless Voyage: Ebb and FlowThe Endless Voyage: Ebb and Flow Notes: The Tides (from the video and the text) For the text you must cite specific page #’s using chapter 10

Motion of the Ocean5/28-29/2015 Objectives: Describe the characteristics of waves and how waves of the ocean are created and their impact Review your Investigation presentation Important Note: Upload Citizen Science Scientific Investigation by the end of the day Watch:The Endless Voyage: Surf’s UpThe Endless Voyage: Surf’s Up Complete:Waves Notes Cloze Activity w/ video and text (some questions have no text references) Notes:Keep all Cloze Activity Notes for the Unit in your H-Drive to submit on June 5.

Motion of the Ocean Tides – done?? 1. What causes them and why can they happen? Gravitational pull of the sun and moon. Water is fluid and flows (fluid dynamics) 2. Compare the equilibrium theory to the dynamic theory of tides. Equilibrium theory is based on a uniform Earth, no continents and no tilt whereas the dynamic theory takes those factors into account to predict tides 3. What kind of tides do we experience during new moon and full moon? Spring tides (largest ones) are formed because the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun are acting together in one direction. When the Sun and Moon are perpendicular to each other and the Earth, the lowest tides are formed, called neap tides.

Tides 4. What is the periodicity of tides around the world and why? Tides are diurnal, semidiurnal and mixed This is due to the continents, there shapes and the travel of tides from west to east. 5. What increases the magnitude, speed and height, of tides in estuaries and bays? The bays and estuaries constrict the space within which the tides can travel. Water goes from wide open space to restricted space and the energy does not change so the tide becomes more dynamic and can be seen as tidal waves. 6. What would happen to the Earth’s climate if we had no tides? The water would not mix as well and the warm waters of the tropics would not mix with the ice cold polar waters which would cause the climates to become colder with resulting continental glaciers. Think “Day After Tomorrow.”

Waves 1. Are the waves really moving water from one place to another? What is actually being transferred? No, it is energy 2. What causes tsunamis? movements of earth’s crust such as earthquakes tidal waves are waves made by the moon and sun 3. What determines the characteristics of surface waves? the strength or speed of the wind; the area over which the wind blows; the length of time the wind blows 4. What do internal waves do regarding temperatures of the water and nutrients? they mix the water and distributes the nutrients

First 3 Cloze Activities Review:Currents View:Something in the Air Notes:Weather Cloze Activity for video & chapter 8 Homework:All cloze activity notes due for CCS tomorrow

Currents 1. To what are ocean currents likened and what do the transport? Rivers that carry heat and nutrients 2. What produces currents? Prevailing winds, variation in density and sea level changes 3. How do currents affect climate? Current temperatures modify the atmosphere continuously as they interface with it and persist for centuries 4. What factors produce therrmohaline currents at depth? Variations in salt and temperature 5. What factors control the direction of currents? Coriolis effect, change in ocean bottom, land masses 6. Where does deep water circulation originate? The poles
