Butterflies…. Butterflies are one of the most beautiful group of insects. They are Lepidopterons. They perform ecological services such as pollination and environmental balance. They are key components of food webs. We need to conserve them. They are facing risks due to habitat destruction and pollution 3

4 Why a Butterfly Garden in a Wetland? Suitable microclimatic conditions Appropriate vegetation Support ecosystem diversity Chemical free environment Supply of natural bio indicators Aesthetic value Service Learning Faculty of Science| University of Colombo

Service Learning Faculty of Science| University of Colombo 5 To plan and design a butterfly garden in Thalawathugoda to increase the diversity of the Biodiversity Study Park To carry out surveys for Butterflies, their host plants and nectar plants To investigate about the different plants (host plants and nectar plants) and other environmental factors that affect butterflies To Implement and maintain the vegetation of the butterfly garden in an eco-friendly approach To the public and facilitate school children/researches to conduct experiments and further researches on butterflies Objectives

12 CONCLUSION So far 43 butterfly species, belong to 5 families have been identified. Forest gardening concept was used. Nearly 40 plants have been planted and all the invasive and exotic plants were omitted. During the estimated time, supporting infrastructures have been created. 100% Eco-friendly fertilizer have been used. DRAWBACKS Extreme environmental and weather conditions Invasive plants Delay in supplies
