Report from the Field: How Cross-Sector Collaborations are Advancing STEM Learning Traphagen & Traill, 2014 Use no more than FIFTEEN words to create a gist statement that answers the question: Why does an Ecosystem approach to STEM matter?

Unique Contributions Designed pathways Shared vision Cross-sector collaboration A STEM Ecosystem? Report from the Field, Traphagen & Traill, 2014

STEM, STEAM, STEMS, STREAM, ESTEEM, THEMAS WHO CARES? In SC, we use STEAM, STE(A)M and STEM and the Arts interchangeably to mean learning that thoughtfully integrates the practices and habits of mind of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the fine and applied arts.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT STEM AT HOME? Most parents (93%) believe STEM should be a priority in the U.S. (Harris Poll 2011) Among those surveyed, the two careers that parents most want their child to pursue are scientist (24%) and engineer (21%). (Harris Poll 2011) ~29% of SC students taking ACT expressed interest in STEM. This is above the national avg. of 23%. (ACT, 2014) ~47% have NO INTEREST. (ACT, 2014) Harris Poll 2011

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT STEM IN SCHOOLS? STEM students say that there is room for improvement in K – 12 STEM education — only 1 in 5 feel they were extremely well-prepared for their college STEM courses. 50 % of ALL 2013 ACT tested HS Graduates meet College Readiness Benchmarks in Mathematics. 43 % in Science. Minorities? Non-College Bound? Interest begins at age When STEM is least likely to be an instructional focus.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT STEM IN OUT OF SCHOOL TIME? In SC, we use after-school and out-of-school-time interchangeable to mean learning taking place outside of a traditional school day time period or school setting. Before college, WHAT got you interested in STEM? 55% of males and 45% of females identify TV, movies or books. 61% of males and 29% of females identify games or toys. 28% of males and 40% of females identify visiting a museum. 25% of males and 27% of females identify clubs or activities. NOTE: Just 4% of males and 6% of females identify science fairs/contests. (Harris Poll 2011)
