Addressing policy needs through integrated research: the example of the PASTA project Prof. Regine Gerike - on behalf of the PASTA consortium Institute for Transport Studies - BOKU

The urban challenge | 2 Close linkage between citizens’ health and transport systems’ performance, we know: Half of all trips shorter than 5 kilometres are undertaken by car. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for death worldwide. Globally one in three adults is not active enough. The policy challenge: How can we effectively increase the amount of physical activity of citizens in the urban environment? Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

Translating the policy need into research questions: | 3 Determinants of physical activity Personal attributes Comparison and assessment of policy practice Impacts of physical activity Social, physical environment, interventions Relationship transport/non- transport physical activity Air pollution Health Cost Safety Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

4 Transdisciplinary Research for answering policy and research questions: Societal Challenges Results for Societal Practice Results for Scientific Practice Scientific Challenges Societal Discourse Transdisciplinary Integration: Evaluation of New Knowledge for its contribution to societal and scientific progress Scientific Discourse Formation Common Research Object Production New Knowledge Interdisciplinary Integration Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

This is where PASTA comes in: | 5 Connect dots sustainable transport – health Identify key factors active mobility/travel as part of people’s everyday lives Assess a range of related approaches and policy options; Longitudinal survey on physical activity, travel, road traffic collisions and air pollution Up to 14,000 people from seven European cities Produce a tool and guidance for policy makers. Support evidence-based policy making, using a transdisciplinary approach Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

Our transdisciplinary research approach: the 3-step process 1.Bringing together the right people 2.Collaborating in a transdisciplinary setting 3.Creating a useful tool and guidance for policy makers | 6Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

Our transdisciplinary research approach: the 3-step process 1.Bringing together the right people 2.Collaborating in a transdisciplinary setting 3.Creating a useful tool and guidance for policy makers | 7Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

1. Bringing together the right people: policy makers and an interdisciplinary group of researchers -Strong emphasis on the involvement of policy makers from the start of the project -An interdisciplinary group of researchers from a leading institutes and research -Support from an advisory of experts in the fields of sociology, planning and health | 8Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

Collaborating in a transdisciplinary setting: Societal Challenges Results for Societal Practice Results for Scientific Practice Scientific Challenges Societal Discourse Transdisciplinary Integration: Evaluation of New Knowledge for its contribution to societal and scientific progress Scientific Discourse Formation Common Research Object Production New Knowledge Interdisciplinary Integration Policy challenge: increase physical activity Research challenge: determinants, impacts physical activity, assessment policies HEAT Guidance good practice Scientific Publications Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

3. Creating a useful tool and guidance for policy makers | 10 Project findings will feed into the redevelopment of WHO/Europe Health Economic Assessment Tool (HEAT) - add new functions and modules. It facilitates population-wide assessment, translating the effects of active mobility measures into a quantitative evidence-based, evaluation. This tool, together with guidance on good practice, will be made available for free online. Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies
