Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed.

Physical Property Characteristics that can be observed, using the five senses, without changing or trying to change the composition of a substance.

Examples of Physical Properties Luster Malleability (the ability to be hammered into a thin sheet) Ductility (the ability to be stretched into wire) Melting Point Boiling Point Solubility Color Odor Taste Texture Flexibility Viscosity

Chemical Property Characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the sample.

Examples of Chemical Properties Flammability Ability to rust Reactivity with vinegar

Physical Change Change in which the form or appearance of matter changes, but not its composition.

Density Mass of an object divided by its volume. Can be used to identify a substance The density of water is 1.0g/mL

Boiling Point The temperature in which a liquid becomes a gas.

Melting Point The temperature in which a solid becomes a liquid.

State There are three states of matter: Solid Liquid Gas

Liquid Matter with a definite volume but no definite shape that can flow from one place to another.

Gas Matter that does not have a definite shape or volume; has particles that move at high speeds in all directions.

Solid Matter with a definite shape and volume; has tightly packed particles that move mainly by vibrating.

Deposition The process by which a gas changes into a solid.

Sublimation The process by which a solid changes directly into a gas.

Vaporization The process by which matter changes from a liquid state to a gas state.
