Who wrote Huck Finn? Was it Mark Twain or Samuel Clemens? Both! Samuel Clemens took the pen name of Mark Twain in 1863 “mark twain” was a term used on river boats to indicate a river depth of two fathoms (a fathom is equal to 6 feet)

Basic Facts Sam Clemens was born in He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri. His family were slave holders. Because of the times, he never realized that slavery was wrong. Several of his characters are modeled after people in his own childhood. As he grew older, he began to see the effects of slavery and the immoral treatment of blacks.

What was happening in Twain’s time? The Civil War began ,000 Americans lost their lives. Slavery was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation in Blacks were still not given rights to vote or equal rights of other free people.

More Twain Facts! He began to sympathize with the way blacks were being treated. He was a humorist who frequently used satire.

What is satire? Satire is: A type of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice or folly in hopes of social reform.

Huck Finn is a Dynamic Character Dynamic – changes through the story Static – remains the same through the story Tom Buchanan – static or dynamic? George Wilson – static or dynamic? If you only read part of the book, you will not see Huck’s transformation!

Why is there controversy in Huck Finn? Bad grammar example due to the “low” language of Huck (rough dialect) It deals with low morals and standards (lying, stealing, cheating, etc.). Some critics say it depicts slaves as ignorant through their superstitions and language. The derogatory “n” word is used 215 times in the novel.

Is Mark Twain a racist? Mark Twain selected his words to reference how slaves were generally referred to in the 1800’s in order to show how the white race were continuing to treat the slaves who had recently been “freed.”

Why do we still read Huck Finn? Twain creatively writes about class, violence and racism in America. Do these issues still affect us today?
