“SAFETY OF USE MESSAGE” “WARNING” DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO SOLDIERS, OR DAMAGE TO ARMY EQUIPMENT WILL OCCUR IF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS MESSAGE ARE NOT FOLLOWED. “SAFETY OF USE MESSAGE” This message is being sent to notify the users of the M40A1 Chemical-Biological Field Mask, M42A2 Chemical-Biological Combat Vehicle Mask, M45 Chemical-Biological Land Warrior Mask, and M45 Chemical-Biological Aircrew Masks that Coupling Halves Quick Disconnect (CHQD) were not produced to the Technical Data Package and under certain extraordinary circumstances have the potential to allow agent leakage, creating a hazard to personnel.

PLACE MASK ASSEMBLY ON FACE STEP # 1 PLACE MASK ASSEMBLY ON FACE Dawn and Seal the Chemical-Biological Mask IAW the proper Operator’s Manuals.

STEP # 2 PULL HOOD OVER THE HEAD AND ADJUST IT AS ILLASTRATED IN THE PHOTO FOR BETTER ACCESS TO THE (CHQD).

COUPLING HALVES QUICK DISCONNECT STEP # 3 BUDDY AID The (CHQD) is located and unfastened by a buddy to conduct the procedure. COUPLING HALVES QUICK DISCONNECT (CHQD)

STEP # 4 Fill a cup of water Immerse the (CHQD) into the cup of water. Forcefully blow into the internal drinking tube. A buddy will watch for bubbles in the water.

NOTE 1. If there are no bubbles, the (CHQD) is operational. The (CHQD) will be replaced at a later date through the Urgent MWO 3-4240-346-20-3 (M40A1 and M42A2 Masks) and Urgent MWO 3-4240-40-20-1 (M45 Land Warrior and Aircrew Masks). 2. If bubbles are detected, the (CHQD) is not operational and the mask is non-mission capable—remove the mask from service immediately and replace it.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE (CHQD) (1) To obtain replacement of the (CHQD), email requests to Chem/Bio-MWO@ria.army.mil. All email requests must include the following information: Unit Name: ____________________ Unit UIC: ______________________ Unit Location: ___________________ POC Name: ____________________ POC Phone Numbers (DSN and Commercial):_____________________ Quantity of Masks Requiring Replacement (CHQDs): You must list the individual mask NSN and the quantity of (CHQDs) required for each mask NSN, for example: Mask NSN: 4240-01-370-3823 Qty. of (CHQDs)-100 Ship To Address: ____________________ ____________________

******** The new replacement (CHQD) has three knurling (raised ridges on the surface) stripes in contrast to only two knurling stripes on the older (CHQD). ********* Old (CHQD) with only two knurling stripes. NOTE Upon receipt of the new (CHQD), the user must immediately replace the (CHQD) and dispose of the old (CHQD) in accordance with MWO Disposal Instructions.
