Matthew 5:17-48 What Did You Hear?

Beginning of the sermon = character Coming to Christ His righteousness What you are (Salt & Light) The rest of the sermon = conduct

Three types of Law 1. Ceremonial - Approaching God Blood sacrifices & the priesthood (Exodus / Leviticus) Jesus dealt with this on the cross “It is finished”

2. Civil - Intricacies of interaction Regarding Israel as a Theocracy Practical governance (Work, Marriage etc...) Only concerned Israel but good for our teaching

3. Moral - Standard of behaviour for all people Jesus speaks of this law here 10 Commandments (Exodus 20) This law is... Realistic (vs. 17) Relevant (vs. 18) Right (vs. 19)

What did Jesus demand? A righteousness GREATER than the Pharisees Theirs may be legitimate but external Jesus deals with the root of the problem...the attitude that leads to the actions Jesus refers to the Pharisees quoting of Scripture “You have heard it said...” “But I tell you...” [we are going to deal with the root cause]

What is the root cause of failing in the moral law? It’s not what we do! That is the symptom. It’s our attitude towards other people. Be it our enemies; neighbours; family; spouses Righteousness is ultimately the expression of the character of God The demand of Jesus is a work from the inside out cf. Matt. 23:25-28

When we become the right person inwardly, we are then able to do the right things with moral integrity. How? Next time!
